Free TV on your PC
I missed the last ITS Open Forum, but I heard that ITS has IPTV up and working. Right now seven channels are available. I am impressed with the quality. Blowing up the channels full-screen on the 50" plasma in the Freedman Center still looks good. It looks like most channels are streaming around 1600k/s in a windows media format for those who are interested.
I searched for IPTV from the Case home page but nothing came up, so I contacted a friend about how to access the content. Unfortunately, the only way he knew to access the content was through the portal. To make things simple and save you the burden of being forced to use the portal yet again (and because it doesn't seem to be working in Safari in OS X) here are the direct links to the channels:
CNBC
MSNBC
FOX News
BRAVO
OSTN
SciFi
USA

Can you post this info on the wiki?
I'm not having much success playing these on Linux. My gut feeling tells me this is an encrypted stream and playing it will be impossible, at least on Linux. I've tried Xine and Mplayer with no success. Why can't we just send an unencrypted stream locally? I mean this stuff isn't available off campus, is it?
Who knows.

Gregory, I think you are right about the encryption. My Windows Media Player prompted me to download some sort of license.
Yes, I'll post to the wiki.

Aaron, I just tried one (Bravo) (OS X/Safari) and it returned an indecipherable error message.
Tried another and got this:
Not Authorized to access this content
Sorry, but you are not authorized to view this content! Please make sure you are logged on to your school's portal before attempting to access OSTN!
If you feel that you are recieving this message in error, please contact support@ostn.tv

I have noticed that some of them still do not work in safari. I think only one or two of them do? I think it has to do with the MS copyright protection.
I got the strange portal message for one of them on a PC, but the others seemed to be working OK.
Wouldn't that be nice if they really do FORCE us to use the portal to get content? What a great marketing strategy; we should force students to use the library before they are allowed to register for classes and force all staff members to pick up paychecks here. It would surely raise our visitor count and then everyone could praise the library as a huge success!

Are you trying to suggest that we aren't already a huge success???? :-)
Posted by: wpc | July 27, 2005 03:14 PM
Not at all... which is why we do not have to force our visitors to be visitors, and why people want us to be open 24x7.
People like it in here in KSL. =)

Has anyone had any success with IPTV lately? Every time I try, I get a message indicating the server may be down. When viewed through the portal, I just get a blank screen with the word "ready" after "Connecting to media"...Could it be that these streams are not available off campus? I have been trying with a vpn connection.

The links don“t work anymore. Any new stream links?
Posted by: blogcomment | July 17, 2006 10:25 AM
No, no new links.

I should point out that the direct feeds are only accessible if you are on the physical campus network through a wired or wireless connection.
Off-campus users and alumni will have to use the Case Portal.
Persons unaffiliated with CWRU may not access the streams.
