Nike+ iPod Review; w/ Audio Sample
I ran with my Nike+ iPod for the first time this morning. The device works great! Here is the audio sample if you'd rather not read any further. The voice over-top of the music is impressive.
The music you hear in the background is from fitpod. I listen to both Fitpod and Podrunner whether on the track or when hitting the weights. They are weekly podcasts designed for people working out. I highly recommend them! The composer, DJ Steveboy, releases different BPM workouts for these podcasts each week so I can chose between 135 and 175 to tune my running steps to the music. It helps one maintain a constant pace and I find them highly motivational for exercise. I have heard most runners run at 160-165 and I find this range to be right for me too.
Yes, the device works with my non-Nike shoes. Most committed runners I know would never buy a pair of Nikes for running so this is good news for us. I tried putting the Nike device under my front shoestrings but it falls out after about 1/2 mile. Next I put it in between the left side of my heel and the shoe. It seemed to still work there but I had questions about accuracy because it was sideways. I noticed that it does not detect walking when placed sideways by my heel but this isn't all that surprising. I have read about using sticky velcro on the Nike device and sewing the other piece of velcro to the shoe. I think I am going to do that too.
I love having the voiceover and workout stats at the push of a button. The Nike+ website looks promising (see image below) but I only have a few "workouts" uploaded so far. The value in all this for me is that workout logging is automatic. I just sync my iPod like I always do and my data goes to Nike.com. I look forward to having a year's worth of data on there to see how I improve over time. The Nike site lets me "challenge" people too. I sent my brother a 1 mile challenge, meaning I run one mile and he runs one mile and Nike.com compares our times and lets us know who won.
Would I recommend it? Yes. I will never run without it again.

Keep us updated as you experiment with it and use it more.
I personally use a Garmin Forerunner, since I do more hiking than running. The GPS was what I was interested in, but the Forerunner also has the pacing capabilities you describe. It is neat sharing the GPS maps and other statistics (distance, pace, elevation, etc.) with my family after an exciting hike.
Several websites, such as Motion Based grew out of the GPS fitness devices. I expect in the future you will see many websites in direct competition with Nike site, so you can take advantage of different interfaces or options using your data.

Interesting. I'm curious why Nike shoes are bad. Mind doing a post about that?

That is a good question Ross. Go to a 5k road race or a marathon and look at the top ten runners. Ever see Nike shoes on them?
A few years ago I went to Runner's World looking for shoes for XC. I had Nike basketball shoes and liked them. When I asked about Nike running shoes they recommended against them. Adidas were recommended against too. Why don't the top runners wear Nike and Adidas? I don't know.
My personal favorites are Asics and Pumas, but everyone has different feet and needs different shoes.

I avoid Nike because I find they have the highest arch supports of all the running shoes, and I have very flat feet. From others I know that tried Nike, they felt the support deteriorated much quicker than other varieties and the "feel" changed over time. I also have heard comments that Nikes are designed for the runner with perfect form rather than the average runner. I wonder if that is true?
As a heavier runner, I found that New Balance or certain Adidas offer better support.

I know a lot of elite runners who use Nikes. I also know that many of the top marathoners in the world are sponsered by Nike. Most of the runners I know use either New Balance or Nike, so I'm not real sure where you're getting the idea that runner's don't like Nike. Hell, Nike was founded for runners by one of the greatest track and field coaches of all time, Pre even used to run in them.

Brennan, I am a runner and have many runner friends and I formed my conclusion based on the many 5k road races in northeast Ohio I have competed in. I just haven't met a middle-distance to distance runner that likes Nike. Maybe Nike shoes is a more regional thing?

Elite runners don't wear Nike???? That is news to me. I was an “elite” runner and I always wore Nike’s.
Now I actually work for Nike so I am sure I have lost all credibility here. Ha Ha
The funny thing is that because I work for Nike I pay a lot of attention to what people wear and I see more Nike's than any other shoe. I do quit a bit of traveling across this country so I am always trying to find a race in whatever city I find myself. Although certain regions vary I still notice a preponderance of Nike’s. It sort of makes me proud. I don’t know why; I don’t design them. Ha Ha
I do agree with the comment that Nike seems to make shoes for “High Arch” feet. There “Top of the Line” models do tend to give my low arch feet some problems. Luckily Nike makes many, many models of shoes so I can always find a “board lasted” Or “straight lasted” model that work great with my feet. I am also a “minimalist” so I love the Nike Free 5.0.
One last comment; Nike makes hundreds and hundreds of different models. Your local store only carries a small assortment. If you want to find a special model made just for you, find a small Mom & Pop store that will special order for you or order them yourself off www.swoosh.com.

Thanks for the tip about www.fitpod.com. I've noticed they have been posting mixes lately that have varied tempo, to support warm-up, sustained workout at optimum heart rate, and then cool down. Other dj's, too.

I run XC, most runners i know agree that for trainners Asics easily surpass other brands, although new balance is also a good choice.
Nike's generally seem to be made of a lower quality, break down faster, and offer less support. I talked to a physical therapist who specialized in sports medicine, she recommends New Balance, although her husband (also a physical therapist) runs marathons in Asics.
Basically, i would say that asics and new balance have the best trainers, BUT nike has some of the best racers.
*i myself havn't worn nike's in 3 years, go asics.*

I am not a fan of nike havent had any nike running shoes for years. Last pair was an old pegasus model with the tongue that fit like a glove, which crushed my high arched foot and arthritis on the top of my foot. I am having a hard time figuring out a good nike plus model that is for high arches and doesnt have that darn tight tongue.. Anyone have any ideas? I currently wear mizunos but hard to get accurate sizing on those. the nano nike plus stuff looks cool but its not with ruining my feet over if I cant find a good nike shoe. So I am guessing this nike plus nano stuff isnt gps related? Just wondering because I have an older garmin forunner model and cant get a darn gps reading.
Happy hoidays and any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I suppose the best part about the nike+ stuff is the "motivation" factor?
