Wiki for K-12 Education?

Looking at wikipedia and all of the information that has been generated by the open-source type collaboration of those who posess knowledge, why not apply that approach to an educational system? Or so thinks Scott McNealy:

From Forbes, "Math hasn't changed since Isaac Newton," declares Scott McNealy. So why, he asks, is California paying some $400 million annually to "update" grade-school textbooks?" ... "McNealy's vision is worldwide access to a free Web site for kindergarten-to-12th graders (K-12). ... the open-source site would allow content creators to donate their own material. Think of online encyclopedia Wikipedia -- but with dependable standards."

This is sort of like the incredible Open CourseWare movement but expanded to K-12. What a wonderful idea!

OpenCourseware at Case anyone?

The only thing that concerns me about replacing traditional textbooks in K-12 schools, even if the information is available online in another format, is are teachers really being prepared for and learning how to teach. While not ideal, a poor instructor can still teach with a well written and organized textbook. If you take the same information and placed it online in a wiki or other format, is that poor teacher able to organize it and share it with students?

A second concern, especially in K-12 education, are computer prolific enough among the families of students to utilize such a resource?

I think higher education has no problems adapting to open course materials, as many professors have written textbooks, organized their own notes or handouts, or had taken over a class for another professor using the original materials. I am not sure that some K-12 educators would be ready for such a conversion.

Sorry for your time.... Why i can't see images on this resource?
