Experiential Learning-student panel
Continuing with the theme of recent programs and visiting campus I wanted to update you on what has been taking up the majority of my spring—open houses for admitted students.
The two programs that I coordinate for the office are our series of weekday open houses called Experience Case and our large Saturday event called Saturday Sampler (for the last two years we have opened up our Sampler event to juniors as well and this year we saw our junior attendance more than double).
Both programs are designed to provide an in-depth view of what it is like to be a student at Case. This includes meeting with faculty, sitting in on classes, touring academic facilities, asking questions of our student services offices (dining services, student activities and leadership, Greek Life, etc) and even spending the night on campus.
In my mind the highlight of the day is our midday panel on experiential learning. This panel highlights the learning that takes place beyond the classroom.
The three consistent topics are co-op/internship, research and student leadership.
Co-op and internship examples have included multiple positions at GE (which has led to a full time job offer), work at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston and Summer on the Cuyahoga.
Research has included work in labs on campus, at The Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals of Cleveland and Cleveland’s VA. One of our highlighted students has even been able to, in part (let’s not forget her other accomplishments), leverage her research experiences into one of ten spots at an elite graduate program in her field.
Student leadership has taken many forms in the presentations including traditional student government roles and positive Greek life involvement. But, leadership can also be found in ‘non traditional’ ways here at Case. This was highlighted by one of our graduating students’ roles in the VP debate that was on campus a couple years ago and others have found something that they see a need for on campus that led them to, um, leadership. One example includes the establishment of CaseEMS.
Just this Monday one of students helped our audience of admitted students and their parents understand that a research university like Case doesn’t limit us to science and engineering discoveries. This student, an Economics/Poli Sci major, talked about her ongoing research in preparation for her Economics Senior Project.
Sitting in on these sessions, and being reminded of the dynamic and committed students that are attracted to Case, has truly reminded me of the value Case places on these experiential learning opportunities.
