Preparing for College Tip #1: Study

Take advantage of what’s left of the summer to prepare for your college search process. Whether you’ve just begun to think about which school to attend or you’ve already visited several colleges, these weekly tips will help you stay organized (and marketable to the college of your dreams). We’ll be posting a new tip each week for the next four weeks.

Preparing for College Tip #1: Study
It’s pretty obvious that you have to study hard to get into a good college. But, it’s not just how hard you study but also what you study that counts. The following is the recommended academic program for Case and most other competitive colleges:

How does your course load stack up? Colleges, including Case, will consider the difficulty of the courses you take and what is available in your school. If you can earn better grades or handle a more rigorous course load, make the adjustments now.

Case in Kenya

A group of Case undergrads will get plenty of sun in the coming months—though not how you may expect. Jeffrey Zabinski, Krishna Surapaneni, Joshua Hollabaugh and Philip Niles are helping to set up an HIV/AIDS testing clinic in Bungoma, Kenya—a rural part of Africa that has been devastated by a skyrocketing increase in HIV infection.

The team’s efforts are part of an Experiential Learning Fellowship, one of several ways Case students can apply coursework in a real-world setting. The team is also working in conjunction with Volunteer Kenya, a nonprofit organization that educates and empowers individuals to fight the global AIDS pandemic.

The students hope to make a positive impact on the public health and quality of life of citizens of Kenya. Check out their blog to see how they are doing.

Weekend Welcome Series “Sells Out”

Our summer Weekend Welcome series has received an amazing response from high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors from across the country. A few minutes ago, we took the last reservation for the final event, scheduled for August 12.

Even though the series is over, we would still love to meet you. Customize a visit (first-time visitors are encouraged to register for a campus tour and group information session; interviews are available only to senior applicants) and plan a weekday road trip to Case.

Note: Sophomores, juniors and seniors--especially seniors interested in applying to Case in the coming months--can also consider attending a Summer Open House.

Come to Case for a Summer Open House

As our series of summer open house events heats up, I wanted to share with our readers some of the feedback we have received about our June 29 event:

“Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Case Western Reserve University summer open house. I learned a lot while I was there. Not only did the tour help answer questions I had about the field I want to major in, it also informed me about other programs that Case offers."

“I was impressed with the size of the campus, the friendly people and the variety of departments/majors available to incoming students."

“The experience overall was very enjoyable, and the campus tour was one of the most thorough campus tours that I have been on."

“Thank you for putting on a very well planned and covered event. We very much enjoyed the tour guides taking the time to answer questions with families…those informal sessions offered a lot of great information."

“Overall, this was an excellent experience. I got a sense of the campus, where the buildings are located, the admissions process, and a glimpse at some of the specific programs offered at Case."

Open houses take place on Fridays from July 13 through August 10; register today so you don’t miss out. Each event includes a campus tour, an overview of the admission process, your choice of four academic presentations (each covers a different undergraduate college), and tours of program-specific labs and other facilities. And, if that's not enough, we provide breakfast and lunch, too.

So break out your planner and plan a road trip to Case. Consider staying in town for the weekend to explore the surrounding area.
