Case Western's Alumni Give a $4.5 million Makeover

Undergraduate labs get a $1.6 million face-lift thanks to alumnus L. David Baldwin (B.S. ’49 Physics). Baldwin’s research on mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) has lead to possible treatments of a multitude of afflictions. “The Baldwin gift will defray upgrade expenses to transform the undergraduate labs and accompanying classrooms to top-level electronic classrooms, adding physiology laboratory workstations and replacing 30 dissecting microscopes.” The donation will also create a three year term chair, the L. David and E. Virginia Baldwin Professorship. To date Baldwin has contributed $4.5 million through the Case Alumni Association (CAA).

Some Quality Face Time with Research at Case Western

We can make you stronger, faster, better.

Thanks to Radhika Atit we may one day make a whole new you. Atit is currently researching the growth of face skin cells in the hope of being able to grow replacement skin for people with an facial injury. Her hope is to generate fully-functioning skin cells that give full sensory function to even growing new hair.

"The goal is to create synthetic functional skin using one's own cells," Atit said. "The problem so far in skin regeneration is that they don't have competent dermis, and without dermis, they have no functional parts of the skin." –Atit

The dermis is the layer of skin cells under the top layer that is the living and regenerating part of the skin. Atit hopes to use mice to understand how the dermis forms from blank precursor cells that can also form a multitude of structures.

1st Place is Just the Case in Ohio for Case Western

We reached the top and had to stop, and that’s what’s bothering me.

Once again Case Western Reserve University is the top ranked university in Ohio according to U.S. News & World Report. Being ranked as 41st nation-wide, Case is the only Ohio institution in the top 50 out of 258 universities.

"I am proud that Case Western Reserve University remains the highest ranked national university in our state, but it is important to recognize that our quality is best evaluated through the success of our students and the continued commitment of our faculty to excellence in teaching, research and scholarship for the university and for our region."
-Barbara R. Snyder, university president

Early Action deadline extended to November 15

Due to the effects of the fires in California on the homes and schools of our constituents in that state, the Office of Undergraduate Admission has extended the Early Action deadline for all applicants to November 15. Early Action is an application plan that students can use to jumpstart the college application process. Unlike the Early Decision option some other schools offer, Early Action is non-binding.

Deadline to Apply Early Action: November 15
Notification of Acceptance to Case: By January 1

Apply to Case today!

Early Action FAQs

What about my October or November test scores? Can I still apply Early Action?
You can still apply Early Action. The testing agencies send us students’ scores as quickly as possible. We start evaluating Early Action applications in mid-November. We will evaluate your application with the scores we have in hand on the day of review. If you feel it’s critical that we make a review of your application that includes your October or November test scores, you might want to consider applying Regular Decision.

Can I apply for Early Action and the Pre-Professional Scholars Program?
No. You have to choose one of these plans. PPSP has a stringent set of deadlines to allow for committee review and other components of this competitive program.

What are the deadlines for other application plans?
Pre-Professional Scholars Program (PPSP): December 1
Regular Decision: January 15

Case Western Weatherhead Students Sweep-up Cleveland

Weatherhead School students took second in the Net Impact Green Challenge 2007 for cleaning up on and around campus. Students raised several hundred pounds of canned goods for the Cleveland Foodbank, gathered clothing for Shoes and Clothes for Kid’s, and even helped inner city students prepare for their future. On campus Weatherhead students gave out free tax preparation among other services.

Dexter's Laboratory at Case

Question: How many robots does it take to drive a car?

Answer: One, if the robot is the car and the car’s name is Dexter.

Dexter is an autonomous vehicle originally built by ENSCO Inc., a Virginia engineering firm, for a 2005 robotic-car challenge through the Mojave Desert.

Next up is the 2007 Urban Challenge, and ENSCO recruited Team Case to help get Dexter prepared. In order to do this, over 50 engineering and computer-science students and professors are tinkering with Dexter’s brain to give him the ability to follow every traffic rule in the book. Team Case will compete against over 80 other vehicles later in the year for a shot at $2 million in prize money and a chance to work with the U.S. military to design future autonomous vehicles.

I Heart Case's UPB

Sure, Cleveland’s a great place to be, but every once in a while, every student would rather be in the city that never sleeps (and not because it’s studying for a Chemistry midterm!).

The University Programming Board at Case has one of the most important jobs on campus: bringing entertainment to students. And when that fails, they’ll happily bring the students to entertainment. Over Fall Break this year, UPB took 50 lucky students to the Big Apple for a four-day adventure full of sight-seeing, shopping and Broadway shows. Even better, the trip only cost $100 per student!

UPB has a lot planned for the rest of the semester as well. The student committees manage to bring a small band to campus every Wednesday night and take over the student center on Tuesday afternoons to battle weekday blues. Their biggest event of the semester takes place November 17: They Might Be Giants is coming to rock the campus.

Learn more about UPB and its awesome programming here.

Meet Chuck, the official Case Western Reserve University Spartan

While NBC touts its Chuck, we at Case are proudly promoting ours.

Meet Chuck Becker, the new Spartan mascot:

When the call went out last spring for a 2007-2008 Spartan mascot, he applied for and earned the position. Now, he's working to pump up the crowd and inject blue and white fever into athletic and university-wide events.

"I go to all of the home football games. I'm trying to make it to the soccer games, as well as events where people request the official mascot," said Becker, a senior biomedical engineering student from Louisville, Ky.

Read more about the super-spirited Chuck here.

Case competes in the NCAA Division III. Twenty percent of undergrads wear the Spartan colors on the field, on the court and in the pool. Find out more.
