The task of selecting a permanent president for our campus is one of the most important priorities for the University’s Board of Trustees. As chair of the Board, I am pleased to note that the arrival on campus of interim president Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D. will provide the leadership and stability the University needs to move steadily forward during this transitional period. The Board is grateful to Dr. Eastwood for taking on this challenge and we will assist him in working to ensure Case’s future.

As an important component to the University’s future, I am announcing the formation of a Presidential Search Committee which I will co-chair with University Trustee and School of Graduate Studies alumna Joie A. The committee will be staffed by Ellen Caruso, Executive Assistant to the President.

Additionally, the University has engaged Spencer Stuart, an international executive search firm with extensive experience in higher education leadership recruitment. Paula Carabelli and Jennifer Bol of Spencer Stuart will be our principal consultants for the search. The committee and consultants will screen and evaluate all applicants, nominees and recruited candidates and will conduct personal interviews with those of greatest interest. Members of the Case community who would like to nominate individuals for consideration may do so by e-mailing Spencer Stuart at casepressearch@spencerstuart.com Please note this e-mail address is for nominations only.

The success of our search is dependent on the input and involvement of the many people who care deeply about the University. The committee plans to reach out and solicit the assistance of alumni, faculty, staff, students, friends and community leaders, both here in Cleveland and across the country. We have set up a special e-mail address for comments about matters related to the search and its process and look forward to hearing from the University’s many constituents. Please e-mail the committee at presidentialsearch@case.edu

We invite everyone who has a stake in the future of our University to participate in the process. We will provide opportunities for our constituents to take part in forums or focus groups, both in the Cleveland area and in cities across the country where the Case community can offer its views on the qualifications the University should seek in our next president.

The committee also has a great interest in providing information to the campus community as the search moves forward. We will communicate important developments in the presidential search through a website that can be found on the University’s homepage. For those on the campus, news about the search will also be made available through the Case Daily.

The Presidential Search Committee looks forward to working with the campus community, our consultants and the wide community of alumni and friends who call Case Western Reserve University “their” university. I thank you in advance for your interest and participation in this most important endeavor.

Case needs to step to the plate and get a President from an Ivy League Program. Nothing personal against Edward Hundert but the fact remains he came to us from the University of Rochester, which no means can compare to Case. What he accomplished at Case would be quite an achievement for a school like Rochester but not at Case. If Case wants to be mentioned in the same breath as Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT and Stanford, our next President has to be someone who has thrived in these schools.

The search committee needs to rid itself of the city wide inferiority complex thinking we cannot compete with the Ivy League schools or other large metropolitan areas. The reality of the situation is we certainly can compete but before we can accomplish this we need a leader who has a proven track record of success at the type of Ivy League Institution we desire to be.

As a firm believer in Cleveland, may I encourage the University, to make National Headlines by paying the big bucks and getting a big name into the University. Considering the high tuition rates the University charges, the search committee owes it to the students to bring in someone with national recognition and the credentials to help the University and City grow. Anything less than this would be a slap in the face to us Alumni.

How about considering Scott Cowen. He did a fine job with the Weatherhead School and now runs Tulane University. He knows Case and Cleveland. Perhaps he would consider returning to take on this challenge. I'm sure he would do a wonderful job if he's interested in the opportunity. Let's put him on the list for possible candidates.
