Archives for the Month of February 2008 on Andy's Geol 390 Online Journal

Week 5

This week we saw a presentation by Ralph Harvey and by Peter Whiting. Ralph Harvey had some interesting projects involving meteorites or planetary geology. Peter's projects were closely related to projects that Gerry had presented. Over all I think I will stick with the project I have already chosen. I also found an interesting article in the school paper concerning drilling at the farm and how some people are rather angry that its going on.

Week 4

This week I talked to Professor Saylor about possibly working on the gas drilling project she had mentioned when she came in. I was given a website to go to and look at some of the well information in the surrounding area to get an idea of what the farm is like. I looked at this for a while but have not really had a chance to do it this week. Otherwise this week Professor Van Orman and Professor McCall came in to present thier research. Professor McCall's research involved organisms in lake Erie sediments. Professsor Van Orman's research all involves high pressure geochemistry. While both of these are interesting I don't know if that what i really want to do.

Week 3

This week we looked at two papers. The first of these papers was by Professor Saylor which focused on her stratigraphic work in Namibia. She was Dationg ash layers using geochemistry to tell if they were related to other ash beds in the area. Shealso presented on current projects that she may have for us to do as our senior projects. The other paper was Professor Matisoff's paper on Oxygen levels in lake erie and their relation to soil oxygen levels. He took core samples of the bottom of lake erie and Checked their oxygen levels to see if this could help to locate the problem. He also presented on his current worka nd showed us his lab. That was about it for this week.
