Text Book readings vs. Xanedu readings

In this class we are required to read many chapters out of our text books and read many Xanedu articles. I strongly believe that most of the readings out of the text books are a waste of time. They go over information that is sometimes useless. Some of the chapters are on topics that we are already completely familiar with. For Example, the two chapters we had to read on listening. Why should I have to read about how to listen to someone else. I am capable of doing that very well already. On the other hand, I like reading the Xanedu articles because they incorporate real life situations. They are more interesting, and I usually get much more from them.

I too have mixed feelings about all the readings we are required to do. I feel the textbook has applicable topics that will help us relate to people when we work, but it seems like most of the stuff is common sense. As for the Xanedu readings, they seem to be more interesting partially because they are case studies or realistic hypothetical situations. Although both are good sources of information, I prefer the Xanedu readings over the textbook. But who's to say otherwise?

Yeah, I have to agree for the most part. I find that the Tucker readings are generally adequate, although the Dessler readings by and large seem to be either common sense or completely useless. I would like us to do more Xanedu readings as well, especially those of a case study format, because they stimulate thinking and give opinions of those who have considerable experience in management. Also, I wish we would discuss our readings in class more often sometimes. It has been a little while since we have had an energetic discussion in class, which we had somewhat frequently early in the semester.

Grr... this Case network seems lousy this year, I don't know if my last remark posted or not, anyways, I'll try again.

I would pretty much agree with what you wrote. However, I think that the Tucker readings can be pretty good at times. The Dessler readings however are terrible. They usually seem to incorporate plenty of management "buzz" words such as synergy and have little useful content. The Xanedu articles tend to be very interesting, especially those that are the case studies. I liked that one early in the semester on "The Strategy that Wouldn't Travel," and I hope that we will have more like that.

Man, i totally agree with you that the book are sometime useless. However, they reminded me of a lot of thing that we sometime forget. I know we know them already, but sometimes it is good to read and remind us.

I completely agree with you. I often wonder why I spent the money I did on the books for this class when they are pretty much useless. The only thing I feel was worth the money was the Xanedu course pack.

I agree that the book is useless. I feel glad that i spent over a hundred dollars on them.

I've managed to save up roughly $51481 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
