Who Needs 1000's of Results?

A recent survey confirms that users will give up on search engine results by the 3rd page. 41% of users will switch search terms or search engines if acceptable results do not appear on the FIRST page.

That's an interesting result. Why do people give up so quickly, I wonder? Impatience? Or because they think that the later entries are less valid?

It seems that the only reason for noting 1000's of entires is to keep score, to show the popularity or lack of it of some keywords.

I think several factors come into play. First, people usually get successful results in the first few hits, so they expect it all the time. People are generally impatient. Most people also do not have effective search skills to use the advanced search features. May people do not understand how search engines work, especially that the earliest results might have paid to be high in the list.
