Textbook Rentals

I remember reading about this some time ago, and the company is still succeeding. According to the New York Times on July 4, 2009, Chegg.com is still renting textbooks. It is a multiple million dollar business that shows no end to the growth so far.

Ohio students are lucky to have a similar program called the Ohio Textbook Portal.

I find the success of these programs as proof that Amazon's approach with the Kindle DX and the textbook sales can be successful. Many people suggest students want to keep their textbooks, but I suspect there are only a couple that a student would want to keep beyond their classes.

Major Chemistry Publisher Apparently Phasing Out Print Journals

It appears from an article in Nature (Published online 17 June 2009) that the American Chemical Society has announces steps to phase out their print journals in favor of all electronic access.

I wondered what major publisher would be first to take this action.

I think I have seen everything now. No longer is at least one team of the West Akron Baseball League using their traditional dugout hand signs for the base coaches. To be a coach on this team, you better be on the same "network" as the team manager. The commands to the base coaches are being delivered by text messages. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that the team manager, the son-in-law of the former Cleveland Indians skipper Mike Hargrove, has started utilizing the technology because the coaches were missing the signs. I can already see how this will play out in the next Major League movie.

Verdict Over Digital Music Theft

I guess I will have to watch this story and related developments with more interest. Some how I missed that a Case Western Reserve University student was being pursued by the music industry.

The story shares the verdict against a Minnesota woman. She must pay $1.92 million for 24 songs. It also points out a Case student is being sued as well.

Ohio Collaborative Conference on Bioinformatics (OCCBIO)

The fourth annual Ohio Collaborative Conference on Bioinformatics will be hosted by Case Western Reserve University on June 15-17, 2009.

The conference provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of methods, research findings, and experiences.

An important goal for the conference is to foster long-term collaborative relationships and networking opportunities within the domain of computational approaches to biology that benefit Ohio.

The USA is a publishing machines when it comes to engineering. Sciencewatch.com released the "Top 20 Countries in Engineering" which includes publications and citations from 1998 to end of 2008. USA has three times more publications than the next country.

Project Gutenberg Texts on iPhone

Project Gutenberg, actually the e-reader that had access, was originally banned from the iPhone due to access to the Kama Sutra. It is now allowed. I am guessing there is much more "porn" on the iPhone than the text of the Kama Sutra.

Case's Very Own Second Life

It has been a busy week for technology at Case Western Reserve University. Today, Case announced it would be the first educational institution to deploy the standalone version of Second Life.

It will be interesting to see over time if more adoption occurs by faculty and students knowing the environment is closed to only the Case community. I know demonstrating Second Life in presentations I always hear the negatives (porn, griefers, etc.). A closed environment removes the traditional complaints but could bring other challenges.
