Firefox Plugin: Case Directory
(This post has been updated as of 2006-04-19 to reflect a new version. Thank you Matt Heimbach for creating the fix!)
(This post has been updated as of 2006-01-18 to reflect a new version. Thank you.)
Firefox users can now quickly search the Case University Directory with ease! Go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ and type "CaseDirectory" in the "Site Name:" search box. Click "OK" and then restart Firefox. You're good to go!
Thanks goes to Matthew Heimbach for pointing out the old version did not work any more (twice!). If you have the old version installed, installing the above version will replace the old version without any hassle.

I wrote a spiffy little search plugin for Firefox that allows you to quickly and easily search the Case Phonebook from your browser. Neat-o!

It wouldn't work. I clicked on the link and nothing happened.

You need to go to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/. In the search box, type "Case". You will get a result which will install it. The link posted tries to execute some JavaScript which isn't in this page's source code.

You have now been elected my favorite person in the world. This plug-in will make my life so much easier. I cannot thank you enough.

Oooooh, very cool. Thanks!

I'm confused. I think it installed ok but I don't see any directory search on my toolbar. What should I be looking for?
Posted by: Carmen at May 27, 2005 01:56 PM
carmen, sending you an email, but for the others...
this installs a Search plugin in the mozilla firefox browser. You can use this search plugin by going towards the upper right hand corner. You will see a smaller box next to a green circle with "Go" next to it.
The default is a Google Search. Click on the google icon and a drop down menu will appear - if you installed my search plugin, you should see the Case Logo there. Select that and you're good to go!

well, i think my little search plugin works great...unless the Case Directory isn't up...
which it doesn't appear to be.
anyone know why it isn't??

Posted by: chod at May 27, 2005 02:27 PM
Yeah, the phonebook is most definitely down. I love how the HTTP header (a 301 Moved Permanently) redirects to the same page. Thankfully Firefox doesn't get caught in an infinite loop.
I can't believe the server is running WN! Talk about old technology.
Posted by: Greg at May 27, 2005 02:30 PM
what a laugh...
well, it looks like it's back up! happy searching...while it lasts...
Posted by: chod at May 27, 2005 02:36 PM
Ben,
It looks like Case changed the URL of the directory. Now when you use the plugin, it says, "This Link is No Longer Supported." Is it easy to change the link in the plugin to make this work again? I use this plugin multiple times a day...it really saves time.

Thanks for the update! I missed having that plug-in.
Posted by: Nicole Sharp at January 18, 2006 09:27 PM
A similar effect can be achieved using a search shortcut. Make a new bookmark to this URL:
http://phonebook.case.edu/local/pb_lookup.cgi?page_num=1&search_text=%s&search_method=regular
In the 'shortcut' field, give it something short that you will use to perform the search. I made mine 'pb'.
Now all you have to do is type 'pb chodroff' into the address bar and it will do the search.
