What do managers need to know about employee promotion, demotion, and firing?

Managers need to know a few things about employee promotion, demotion, and firing...

To begin with, many times the best person is not promoted within a company. Instead, managers will promote their friends and family, which is called nepotism. Being nepotisitic, rahter than fair, is one of the best way to lower morale within a company. Employees will lose all respect they once had for you, and productivity will suffer.

There isn't much to say about demotion. Most people never get demoted. Instead, most workers who are not performing well are fired.

Firing empployees can be a tricky deal. If not handled correctly, it can result in former employees bringing wrongful termination suits against the employee. The rule of thumb with this one is this. Don't fire people for trumped-up reasons. Only fire them if they genuinely have not been doing what they were supposed to do.
