Bees

My garden was a busy place this weekend...for bees. I saw at least four different kinds of bees buzzing around my rose of sharon and hydrangea tree. Take a look at a few of the best shots.

The first two are bees that I would call yellow jackets. These guys were actually pretty easy to shoot. Both were just having a field day with the pollen from the Rose of Sharon tree. I love that they are just totally covered in pollen. Then there is a shot of what I would call a bumblebee, but I'm sure it has a more scientific and proper name. I had the hardest time getting a shot of one of these guys because they would bury their heads in the flower (when I could get shots of their butts) and then leave without much warning. It was nothing like when I shot a bunch on my coneflowers (in which the bees seemed to have lost interet) a month ago. And lastly, here is a bee I don't see very often and I am pretty sure is a honey bee. It was HUGE (an inch or maybe even an inch and a half long). He seemed to be happy crawling around one branch of my hyndrangea tree, surely collecting pollen for the hive.
