Lens Flare Fun at Mesa Arch - Canyonlands
I've always liked the effect of lens flare in photos. Here are a few examples taken close to sunrise at Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

Salvaging Sedona Star Trails
With a little work in Photoshop and a few tricks in Matlab, I ended up with these two images.

I used Photoshop's motion blur filter (only on the sky) on both images to smooth the discrete points I complained about in my previous entry. For the image on the right I averaged back in one of the middle images to make Orion more obvious.
Failed Star Trails

While in Sedona, I took a series of photographs of Orion with the hopes of combining them into star trails. An edited single (uncombined) image is shown in a previous entry. I took 30 images with a shutter speed of 30 seconds and f-stop 3.3 (I left the camera in shutter speed priority). I probably had about 10-20 seconds between photographs (the Nikon D50 has a noise reduction step that requires powering off in order to skip). I originally started out using my remote, but found it was quicker to just push the button. All in all, I was disappointed with the results. The star trails look like there are discrete points (which is in fact the case). So, next time I'll try a shorter shutter speed and try to shorten the time between acquisitions. | |

Sedona Cacti - Fay Canyon

Panoramic Pictures from Arches and Canyonlands National Park
I used Autostitch to stitch together these photos. I'm always happy to support a fellow graduate student.
