Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine will host the Ohio Dental Association's statewide launch of Give Kids a Smile! Day Ohio as dentists across the state take steps to insure the oral health of children. Parents have given an estimated 300 children from Cleveland Municipal School District's John Raper Elementary School and members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland permission to receive a free dental check-up, cleaning and sealing of healthy teeth during the kick-off event on Friday, February 3, from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m. Dental exams of children begin at 10 a.m. and continue the late afternoon.
Pre-selected children with known dental needs beyond cleaning and sealing teeth will make a stop at the Tomorrow's Dental Office Today, when the mobile dental unit pulls up to the Case dental school clinics at Emergency Drive and Cornell Road on February 2 and 3.
The fun-filled day offers some lessons on keeping teeth healthy and visits by some important people. Among the guests are the Tooth Fairy, Slider from the Cleveland Indians and Moondog from the Cavaliers, the Cleveland School of the Arts JazzArts Ensemble, RadioDisney, American Dental Association President Robert Brandjord and Tim Sullivan, president of Sullivan-Schein Dental, a national dental supply company and event sponsor. Also visiting will be a representative from the office of Cleveland Municipal School Superintendent Barbara Byrd Bennett, a member of Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones' office and the regional director for U.S. Senator Mike DeWine.
"Our members take this program to heart. We have dentists throughout the state who have been preparing for this event for months, and others have been holding GKAS programs since the fall and will continue beyond February 3," said ODA President Joseph Crowley.
This will be the fourth year that Case has hosted and participated in Give Kids a Smile! Day. Area dentists from the Greater Cleveland Dental Society, the Ohio Dental Association and Case faculty and students join the volunteer efforts of 1,600 dentists across the state to improve the oral health of children and raise awareness of the impact poor oral health has on children. Some 51 million school hours are lost each year due to tooth aches and other dental illnesses. GKAS highlights the problem of access to dental care for children across the country.
Give Kids a Smile! Day Ohio is a partnership between Case, the Ohio Dental Association, the Greater Cleveland Dental Society and the American Dental Association, with support from the Delta Dental Plan of Ohio, Michigan and Indiana and RadioDisney. Nationally funds for the program are provided by Procter & Gamble (Crest Healthy Smiles), Sullivan-Schein Dental Supply and Dexis Digital X-ray Systems, Inc.
