University faculty to serve as book facilitators for visiting authors

Frank McCourt, Amy Tan, Tony Kushner and Jim Lehrer are just some of the high-profile writers scheduled to visit Cleveland as part of the Cuyahoga County Public Library's Writers Center Stage 2006-2007 Series.

As a sponsor of the series, Case Western Reserve University has identified faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences to serve as facilitators for public book discussions prior to each authors' scheduled visit.

"We are very excited about this new partnership developed between both institutions," said Latisha James, Director for the Center for Community Partnerships. "Case Western Reserve University and the Cuyahoga County Public Library are vital educational resources in the community that supports and encourages life-long learning. Inviting our faculty to facilitate book discussions with others who also have a joy for reading demonstrates the value both institutions have for our partnership."

The series runs through December. Guest authors will speak at Playhouse Square Center's Allen Theatre located in downtown Cleveland. Prior to each author's visit, Case faculty will facilitate free book discussions by the featured author at select county library branch locations, as well as at the university's Kelvin Smith Library. Thrity Umrigar, assistant professor of English and accomplished author of The Space Between Us and Bombay Time, facilitated a book discussion earlier on campus by author Frank McCourt's (Angela's Ashes). English Professor Judith Oster also hosted a book discussion at the library's Fairview Park branch to discuss upcoming author Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club.

The university has received 100 tickets per show, which have been distributed to SAGES/English faculty and students within the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as to the Cleveland School of the Arts. Tickets for the Playhouse Square series are $30 per author appearance, or a special price of $15 for students.
