The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University pulled ahead of dozens of other competitors to take second place in the Net Impact Green Challenge 2007. Net Impact is the largest M.B.A. student club in the nation.
Sponsored by Seventh Generation and Office Depot, the Net Impact Green Challenge participants are actively involved in one of two Net Impact change programs: Impact at Work for professional members and Campus Greening Initiative for student members.
The student winners are members of business school chapters of Net Impact chosen and recognized for creating positive environmental change at their university or college through the Campus Greening Initiative. The inaugural competition involved student chapters from 14 colleges and universities.
The competition among Net Impact chapters evaluated participants' actions and their effectiveness based on the measurable difference of environmental impact, their strategic plan, the creativity of the approach and the stakeholder engagement process, over a sixth-month period, from January 1 to June 1, 2007. Management major and Net Impact chapter president Tatsunori Sasaki led the effort at the Weatherhead School.
According to Linda Robson, chapter member and the university's Finance and Administration Fellow for Energy Studies, the Weatherhead School's Net Impact Chapter surpassed other business schools by:
"Many of the steps that helped us do so well in the Green Challenge are things that anyone can do at home or at work," Robson said. "Things such as enabling the double-sided printing function to cut down on paper use and waste, recycling, turning off and unplugging any electronics that aren't being used, and taking advantage of the beautiful Case campus by walking to meetings, saving 15 cents in gas and keeping one pound of climate-changing C02 from being spewed into the atmosphere," she said.
"Even though none of these seem like that big of a shift, taken together they have a big positive impact."
Net Impact's Campus Greening Initiative is a new program to help Net Impact student members put their beliefs into action through campus environmental sustainability efforts. The goals of the initiative are for students to use business skills to improve their universities' influence on the environment, as well as to raise awareness of environmental problems and solutions among emerging business leaders. Net Impact also provides participating members with tangible project management, analytical, and change management skills and experiences.
The Kellogg School of Business at Northwestern University placed first in the Campus Greening Initiative; Yale University placed third behind the Weatherhead School.
