New York alumni couple honored for service
Case Western Reserve University Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing alumna George Ann Hughey Garrison was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994, had a lumpectomy and radiation and walked in the Komen NYC Race for the Cure in 1995.
In those days, only women participated in the race. It poured that Race Day, so George Ann walked the course with her husband, William B. Garrison—also a Case Western Reserve alum—on the sidewalk holding an umbrella over her.
In 1996, the Garrisons started volunteering for the Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as well as giving their time to other organizations, including Case Western Reserve, and never stopped. Nothing got in their way, including George Ann's kidney cancer and Bill's open-heart surgery. They just scheduled medical appointments so that their volunteer agenda was not interrupted.
In honor of their decades of service, Case Western Reserve's New York Alumni Association recently named the Garrisons recipients of the Adrian Freeman (MED '29) Distinguished Alumnus Award.
The Garrisons also have been actively involved in the Case Western Reserve New York Alumni Association for decades. Bill served as president from 1974 to 1978 and George Anne was the School of Nursing representative. They also participated in the Alumni Admissions Program and served on Visiting Committees.
George Ann received her bachelor of science in nursing from the School of Nursing in 1963 and then her Master's of Nursing in 1965. She has remained active with the school of nursing. Bill received his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and applied physics from the Case Institute of Technology in 1957. While at Case, he participated in the Glee Club.
This past year the Garrisons retired from volunteer work but remain committed. In addition to the Adrian Freeman Award, they will receive the Jo'Ann Selkirk Award from Komen Greater NYC this month for their efforts on behalf of the affiliate.
About the Adrian Freeman Award
At the October 11, 1979, executive board meeting, the Case Western Reserve University New York Alumni Association resolved to pay tribute to the memory of Adrian Freeman MED '29. Dr. Freeman had made many contributions over the years to the association, New York board and the New York area. This award was established in his name.
The Adrian Freeman Award is given by the New York Alumni Association to a graduate of Case Western Reserve who has
- exhibited outstanding achievement in his/her field
- contributed to the betterment of the university through service
- contributed to the betterment of life in the New York metropolitan area
This award is presented every two to three years at the Annual Spring Meeting of the alumni association. A committee of executive board members designates possible recipients, and then the full board votes on the committee's recommendation.
