Trustee Gift Helps To Enhance Veale Weight Room

Case Western Reserve University’s Department of Physical Education and Athletics has completed significant upgrades to the Veale Center weight room—made possible by a gift from the university’s trustees.

In addition to aiding in periodic updates of equipment, the $50,000 donation from the university’s 2004-2005 Trustee Annual Fund has provided for the purchase of several new pieces of equipment. The latest weights include numerous combination racks with platforms, multiple types of benches, new bars, new bumper and standard plates and two full sets of dumb bells (from five to 50 pounds and 55 to 100 pounds).

“We sought and received feedback from all the coaches and our sports medicine staff on what they needed and wanted,” said Steve Rubin, head track and field coach, who led a committee appointed to decide how the funds would be used. “We wanted it to look good esthetically but also wanted it to be extremely functional. I think we accomplished that.”

In addition to increasing and enhancing traditional weights, the committee wanted to create an area that would be efficient, especially for the varsity athletes, and expand the services offered. The result: a more organized look for the old riffle range and the addition of medicine balls, bosu balls and stability balls to address innovative trends in sports training.

“It’s good for the department and school because it makes a much better impression then it did before,” Rubin said. “It is now an extremely functional space. Basically, anything you could do before, you can still do -- plus a whole lot more -- and with nicer and more functional equipment.”

Members of the Case Western Reserve Board of Trustees, as well as trustees emeriti, give to the Trustee Annual Fund. These annual fund donations are allocated each year to support a designated program at the university such as diversity, the library and athletics.
