Case Western Reserve University recently honored more than 100 staff members for their long-term years of service. Those who have been with the university for 10, 25, 35, and 45 years received certificates, as well as special gifts or proclamations during Wednesday's Staff Service Awards Brunch.
The awards program was a collaborative effort between the Department of Human Resources, the Staff Advisory Council and the Office of the President.
"This celebration recognizes that the work you've done at Case Western Reserve University is very special, said Carolyn Gregory, vice president for human resources.
Barbara R. Snyder, president of the university, and John Wheeler, senior vice president of administration, also acknowledged the impact that these long-term employees have on the university.
"Everything we achieve depends on your passion and commitment," Snyder told the awardees.
Wheeler echoed those sentiments. "We have an amazing staff, and we appreciate all that you do." He added that this dedicated group helps to keep the university "safe, attractive, functional and efficient. It's a remarkable undertaking."
New to this year's annual Staff Service Awards Brunch was the recognition of 35-, 45- and 50-year employees with a certificate and special proclamation. Although no employees have reached the 50-year mark of employment just yet, almost a dozen have been with the university for 35 or 45 years.
When the 45-year employees first set foot on campus to report to work, the Beatles were experiencing their first No. 1 hit song, I Want to Hold Your Hand, on this side of the pond. Ten years later, Hank Aaron experienced his 715th career home run—breaking Babe Ruth's legendary record—when the 35-year employees began working here. And although the 10- and 25-year employees are the new kids on the block compared to the first two groups, they too have seen the campus, the city and the world experience major educational, technological, cultural and global advances.
Celebrating 45 years of employment with the university in 2009 are MaryLou Cantini, Office of the Provost; Mariah Miles, Macromolecular Science and Engineering; and Alex Schnittlinger, Macromolecular Science and Engineering.
The 35-year employees are Kathleen Blazar, Health Science Library; Edward Bruss, Finance and Planning, School of Medicine; Donald Chenelle, University Financial Aid Office; Sharon Jordan-Davis, Development, College of Arts and Sciences; Virginia Saha, Health Sciences Library; Barbara Sciulli, Student Services, School of Dentistry; Lawrence Squires, General Campus Maintenance; Jo Ann Stiggers, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and Deborah Tenenbaum, Art History, College of Arts and Sciences.

In addition to years of service, three employees received the President's Award for Distinguished Service: Donald Chenelle, University Financial Aid Office; Denise Douglas, School of Graduate Studies; and Janice Eatman Williams , the Center for Civic Engagement and Learning. This is the highest honor possible to be awarded to staff members, and each recipient may only win this award once. Individual stories about these winners are forthcoming.
