Two Alumni Compete on Reality Program Showcasing Cleveland

Team, viewers have an opportunity to win prizes


Viewers have dozens of reality programs to choose from on television and on the Web. However, one of the newest reality shows shines the spotlight on the positive aspects of Cleveland. And two of the contestants championing all of the great things about Cleveland are Case Western Reserve University alumni.

Got City Game Cleveland is a web-based reality game show aimed at showing what a terrific place Cleveland is to live and work, especially for young adults and professionals. The show features three teams of two contestants each participating in hilarious challenges all over the city.

The LiveCLEVELAND! team features Kimberly Sullivan (CWR '07) and Alex Hamberger (CWR '08). They auditioned for the show in early September and were selected to represent the general Cleveland population.

Though not originally from Cleveland, Sullivan and Hamberger found career opportunities in Cleveland after completing their undergraduate education. They both work for interactive marketing agency Rosetta.

Hamberger said he learned of the opportunity through an advertisement. It was described as being similar to "The Amazing Race," one of his favorite shows. "As soon as I heard about it, my friend Kim came to mind as someone who would be perfect to do this with," he explained. The prepped for the show by brushing up on interesting facts about Cleveland.

The show was filmed in five Cleveland neighborhoods: Tremont, Detroit-Shoreway, Downtown, St. Clair-Superior and University Circle, home of Case Western Reserve University and other educational and cultural institutions.

The teams earn points as they compete in trivia contests and challenges around the city. However, they can’t win the ultimate prize until the viewer votes are tallied. When a webisode posts online viewers have a chance to vote for their favorite team, and those votes are added to the team’s challenge points. The team with the most points and votes will win. New episodes debut every Tuesday, and beginning in January, are scheduled to debut on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Viewers can vote once a day until the final voting day in February 2010.

Although the contestants are competing for sweet prizes—including a one-year lease in Tremont Place Lofts, and free tickets to theaters, concerts, sporting events, restaurants, nightclubs, fitness centers and more—voters also have an opportunity to win prizes. Each time they vote, viewers are entered to win weekly drawings of local tickets, restaurant and entertainment passes, as well as the grand prizes, which are one of four book scholarships supplied by the NACS Foundation and Stone Modeling and Talent Agency. The scholarships are giftable and unencumbered, and can be used toward any post-secondary education at a U.S. accredited college or university such as Case Western Reserve.

"We hope families and friends will viral this program out to everyone they know around the world to increase their odds of getting the scholarship. And, it will get the word out that great things are going on in Cleveland," says Barbara Oney, the show's co-creator and co-producer. Future plans might include showcasing other Northeastern Ohio cities.

Hamberger said the experience of doing the reality show was a special opportunity. "The fact that the show is promoting the city was something I was passionate about. I thought it would be a good way for my family and friends to see where I live. It's a city that's really starting to feel like home."
