The popular summer seminar—“Learning and the Brain” by James E. Zull, professor of biology and author of the influential book on this subject titled The Art of Changing the Brain, returns.
The seminar explores the idea that we tend to think of learning as occurring in an abstract world of ideas that exists in an intangible world occupied by 'the mind'. But the mind is the creation of the physical brain and hence any changes in our ways of thinking must correspond, in some way, to actual physical changes in the brain. In other words, learning must be changing the very structure of our brains.
This immediately raises a whole set of fascinating new questions that will be discussed in six, one-hour sessions (each part lecture, part discussion) each Tuesday at noon starting on June 29. Each session will deal with one topic and thus stand alone, though of course participants are encouraged to attend all. You can see the full list of topics on the UCITE website.
In the first session, Zull will examine questions such as: How do changes in learning correspond to physical changes of the brain? What factors facilitate the process? What are the implications of this change for education and classroom practices?
The first session takes place noon to 1 p.m. in the Herrick Room in Allen Memorial Library Building at the corner of Adelbert and Euclid.
