Case Western Reserve University’s Peter B. Lewis Building will bear a resemblance to iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and the Empire State Building on April 1 when its exterior becomes awash in blue lighting in recognition of Autism Awareness Day. The building lighting is part of the Light It Up Blue campaign, a global initiative from Autism Speaks to increase awareness and recognize autism as a health crisis worldwide. Peter B. Lewis will be lit up from about 7 p.m. April 1 until daybreak on April 2, which is World Autism Awareness Day.
“As part of its service mission, CWRU is pleased to join others in raising awareness about a disorder affecting millions of individuals and families around the world,” said Stephen Campbell, vice president of campus planning and facilities management.
This is the first time the building will be lit up in such a manner, but its stainless-steel roof is ideal for a project like this. The uplighting on the building “will strongly reflect the blue light and worthy service message regarding autism signaled by this event,” Campbell explained.
To accomplish the effect, floodlights with blue filters will be strategically placed on the grounds around the building and on the roof. This will wash the primary facades and roofscape in blue light.
World Autism Awareness Day started as the result of a United Nations resolution. It is one of only three disease-specific UN world days. In January, the Centers for Disease Control announced autism affects 1 in every 110 children in the U.S.—a 57 percent increase from 2002 to 2006, and a 600 percent increase in the last 20 years.
