Fundraising Grows for Third Straight Year
Case Western Reserve University’s alumni and friends continued their extraordinary support in 2009-2010, providing $115.5 million in philanthropy. The figure represents an increase of more than 6 percent over the previous year and the second-highest amount ever received. The results also marked the third consecutive year that the university exceeded $100 million in contributions and pledges.

New Alumnus Earns Fulbright Teaching Grant to Egypt
Nicholas Hilgeman wants to teach English, speak fluent Arabic and learn more about the culture and political processes of the Middle East. Hilgeman, who earned a bachelor’s degree in international studies and political science in May, plans to do all of this and more with his Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship Grant. He is scheduled to spend at least nine months working at Zagazig University, located about 50 miles from Cairo, Egypt.

A Case School of Engineering team built a car from the ground up. They had a dune buggy frame and a Briggs and Stratton engine. David Hanneke, a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, CO, will be awarded the Michelson Postdoctoral Prize at Case Western Reserve University Thursday. Tianjin University in China and Case Western Reserve University Partner to Enhance Educational Experiences
Case Western Reserve has welcomed Tianjin University President Gong Ke for the signing of an agreement encouraging exchange of students between the two institutions beginning in the summer semester of 2010. The agreement is likely to be the first formal step toward greater collaboration between Case Western Reserve and Tianjin, one of China's important national universities, particularly in engineering.

Recent Graduate Wants to Make Her Mark in Cleveland, Contribute to Region
Emily Fox has no plans to leave Cleveland now that she has graduated from Case Western Reserve University. After three years, she left campus with the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.), Master of Science in Social Administration (M.S.S.A.), and a certificate in nonprofit management. Fox has lived in the area since the age of 13 when her family moved to Shaker Heights from San Francisco. The recent social work graduate wants to be part of the solution to rebuild the city instead of taking flight to other places.

Engineers Week Is Off and Running Sunday, February 15, at Case Western Reserve University
Engineers Week at the Case Western Reserve University takes off at a sprinter's pace with its own Fun Run. World Doctors Orchestra Concert Features School of Medicine Faculty-Musicians
Doctors from around the world have put down their scalpels and stethoscopes to pick up instruments of another kind to form the World Doctors Orchestra. The orchestra was formed to support the development of medical care and health policy in the world. Faculty from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine is represented by 13 doctors in the orchestra. While academia in general applauds what's been coined as "daddy privilege," Robert Drago, lead researcher of a study on the work-life issues faced by female faculty members, said he found that women report removing wedding rings and covering up other evidence of their marital status during job interviews at universities. They also hide that they are mothers, he said. Drago, the author of Striking a Balance: Work, Family, Life and three related books, gave the keynote lecture at Case Western Reserve University's 5th Annual Provost's Leadership Retreat hosted by President Barbara Snyder and Provost W. A. "Bud" Baeslack.

Two Alumni Named to Case Western Reserve University Board of Trustees; New Board Chair Takes the Helm
Two Case Western Reserve University alumni were added to the Board of Trustees at the governing body's October 17 meeting. Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., who served on the board from 2003-2006 until he was named the university's interim president during 2006-2007, was reinstated to the board. Eastwood is a 1966 alumnus of the Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Larry Sears, a Cleveland-based entrepreneur, engineer and educator, was appointed to a four-year term. Sears is a 1969 graduate of the Case Institute of Technology.

"If only we had some reference books," was the message delivered by Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine alumnus Robert Gilliam, a captain in the U.S. Army serving in Iraq. A donation of 13 books from the School of Dental Medicine answered that call for dentists like Gilliam serving at American and Iraqi Army Dental Clinics.

Edward Ferreri, D.D.S., '40: last survivor of first medical/dental responders in WWII
At the dawn of World War II, approximately 200 members of the Cleveland medical, dental and nursing community left their homes at a moment's notice to answer their country's call. The only medical/dental corps survivor, Edward Ferreri, D.D.S., '40, was deployed in early 1942 with other members of the 4th General Hospital -- Lakeside Unit.

Late Western Reserve University alumna bequeaths $5.7 million to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
The estate of Gertrude Donnelly Hess, one of two women to graduate from the Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1934, has bequeathed approximately $5.7 million to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, the largest bequest by a single donor in the university's long history.
