Case Western Reserve, City of Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic Make Landmark Commitment to Social Responsibility

Case Western Reserve University, the city of Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic marked Earth Day 2008 with a joint commitment to corporate responsibility towards the environment, human rights, labor rights and anti-corruption. The three organizations became members of the United Nations Global Compact today at city hall with Case Western Reserve University President Barbara Snyder; Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson; and Oliver Henkel, chief external affairs officer from Cleveland Clinic, signing on to support and advance the 10 principles of the compact.
"Case Western Reserve University prides itself on being a leader in sustainability and social responsibility," said Snyder. "By bringing the university, city and Cleveland Clinic together through the United Nations Global Compact, we can begin to work with one another to address social, economic and environmental issues both locally and globally."
The Global Compact is an international initiative to promote responsible corporate citizenship. With over 4,000 worldwide corporate members, including companies such as Coca-Cola and Microsoft, it is the world's largest social responsibility movement. Read more.
Provost Search Committee Continues Open Forums April 23 and 24
Case Western Reserve University's Provost Search Committee continues its series of open forums through April 24 to hear from the campus community as members begin their work forming a position description and seeking nominations.
The next forums are scheduled to take place from 4-5:30 p.m., April 23 in Adelbert Hall's Toepfer Room, and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 24 at Ford Auditorium. The final session is primarily for students, but students should feel free to attend any of the forums convenient for their schedules. Conversely, any faculty or staff who were unable to attend the earlier forums should feel welcome to attend the final session April 24.
In addition, please note that the search committee has established two e-mail addresses for additional feedback. The first, provostsearch@case.edu, is for general comments to the committee. The second, caseprovostsearch@spencerstuart.com is specifically for nominations.

The Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations seeks nominations for the 2008 Leadership in Nonprofit Management Award, presented to an individual with an outstanding record of leadership, and the 2008 Organization Innovation Award, presented to an organization with an outstanding record of innovation. Nomination forms and detailed guidelines for both awards are available on the Mandel Center Web site. All nominations must be received by noon on April 23.

Squire Valleevue Farm will once again host the "Summer in the Country"program with courses in creative writing, fine arts and the natural sciences. For additional information, call the Office of Continuing Education at 368-2090. In addition, participants in the classes, as well as the campus community, have an opportunity to rent a garden plot at the farm for $25.
For Faculty and Staff
The Weight Watchers at Work program will have a registration meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., April 23 in Thwing Center's Spartan Room. The group will meet weekly on Wednesdays in Thwing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. beginning April 30. For Students
Applications are being accepted for graduate student research grants, sponsored by the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities. Grants up to a maximum amount of $500 are available to graduate students in the humanities and related disciplines for research expenses not covered by departmental support. The April 2008 edition of the Mind Body Connection, the monthly newsletter from the Center for Collegiate Behavioral Health, is now available online. In addition, previous editions also are available.
Events
The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing's annual Rozella Schlotfeldt Lecture Series will feature Maxine Nunez, a professor at the University of the Virgin Islands and secretary of the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., April 25 in Ford Auditorium. She will speak on the topic of "Health Issues of the Caribbean." A native of the Virgin Islands, Nunez studied nursing in the United States and worked in community health on the mainland before returning home to work and teach.
