Tips from the Reporters

Approximately 75 researchers in the field of nursing from around the region learned tips about how to turn their research into headline news during the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing's daylong conference, "Research into Policy: Making the Journey."
It was everything from what to wear before the camera and how to sound on air when media and public policy experts—Dennis E. Eckart, former U.S. Congressman; Monica Robins, reporter/anchor with WKYC Channel 3 News and senior health correspondent; and Dan Moulthrop, founding host of WCPN 90.3 FM's "The Sound of Ideas" morning program—talked about telling their research stories.
The panelists from the session, "Communicating Research Findings to Key Stakeholders: How to Talk with Media Representatives, Government Officials," had some helpful hints for researchers at the nursing school and others across campus. Read more.

The Relay For Life 2010 committee is seeking canopies to use for the big event on April 16 and 17. They need 10x10 pop-up canopies for several purposes. Send an e-mail to relay@case.edu. This 18-hour event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
A new, state-of-the-art X-ray crystallography facility is located in the Department of Pharmacology. Researchers are invited to learn more by going online or by contacting Chris Dealwis by e-mail or by phone at 368-1652.
Registration is open for Alpha Phi Omega's March for Marfan, a 5k run/3k walk taking place on Saturday, March 20. The event will raise funds for the National Marfan Foundation. Marfan Syndrome is a connective tissue disorder that affects 1 in 5,000 people in America. Go online for information.

The University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education (UCITE) is hosting a discussion on the topic of "Rethinking the Concept of Office Hours" from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, March 18, in the Allen Memorial Medical Library's Herrick Room. Instructional Technology and Academic Computing's Sara Baber, assistant director of faculty support, and Wendy Shapiro, senior academic technology officer and director, will describe the various technology options that are available and how best to use them. The Employee Education, Training and Development Unit will host a session on "Fostering Teamwork" from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 17, in the Toepfer Room, Adelbert Hall. The workshop will describe the benefits of effective teamwork, factors that contribute to or hinder its development and more. Register online.

The Career Center and the Office of Inclusion, Diversity and Equal Opportunity will host Diversity 360: Creating a Career Narrative by Balancing Uniqueness and Inclusion, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., Friday, March 19, in Wade Fireside Lounge. Marilyn Sanders Mobley, vice president for inclusion, diversity and equal opportunity, and Tom Matthews, director of the Career Center, will moderate the discussion. All staff, faculty and students are welcome to join the talk.
A panel discussion on the topic of "Translating the F-Word:Defining Feminism in a Multicultural Society" will take place at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 18, in Thwing Center's Spartan Room. The discussion will examine feminism through the lens of race, class, gender and sexuality. The panelists are Siobhan Brooks, postdoctoral fellow of gender studies at Lawrence University; Courtney Martin, award-winning author of "Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters"; and Veronica Arreola, professional feminist and director of the Women in Science & Engineering Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Clinical and Translational Science Collaborative (CTSC) invites the campus community to a seminar presentation beginning at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, in Frohring Auditorium. The featured speaker will be Reena Mehra, assistant professor of medicine, on the topic of "Sleep Disordered Breathing: An Overlooked Culprit in Arrhythmogenic Risk?" The seminar will be broadcast live.

Neal Meropol, associate director for Clinical Research at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, was re-elected to a three-year term as chair of the National Cancer Institute GI Steering Committee Colon Cancer Task Force.
From May 19 to July 31, seniors Joseph Allen and Will Green will ride with 30 other participants in a charity cross-country bike ride from Virginia Beach, Va. to Cannon Beach, Ore. The trip will take 10 weeks and amount to approximately 3,900 miles. Along the way, the group will make stops in various cities, and they will help to construct a new home for a family in need. In addition, each night the group will give presentations to the community to raise awareness. The trip is planned by Bike & Build, a charity focused on raising money and awareness for affordable housing in America. Learn more.
