Cleveland Heights to try wireless in '07

The Plain Dealer, December 22, 2006

Cleveland Heights -- A city that many cherish as eclectic will seek to strengthen its allure by adding wireless Internet access to the mix. The nonprofit OneCleveland will provide free service to users in the Mayfield, Coventry and Cedar Road corridors under an 18-month deal with the city. If the trial is a success, service could be extended throughout Cleveland Heights, city Law Director John Gibbon said. The city will contribute up to $20,000 to the project, which may cost $150,000 to $200,000, said Mark Ansboury of OneCleveland. Case Western Reserve University, which has many teachers and students who live in Cleveland Heights, will help with the balance, Ansboury said. Read article.

Case commuters love open bridge

The Plain Dealer, December 22, 2006

The Adelbert Road bridge near Case Western Reserve University might as well have been wrapped in shiny paper, tied with a bow and stamped "Do Not Open Until Christmas." For thousands of commuters, University Hospitals employees and Case students and faculty who have battled detour congestion twice a day for nearly two years, the bridge's reopening Thursday was like an early Christmas gift from the city of Cleveland. Case seeks aid for sublease of Halle space

Crain's Cleveland Business, December 11, 2006

Case Western Reserve University is taking a step that signals it may be preparing to drop or scale back its long-stalled plan to move about 300 employees from its University Circle campus to downtown Cleveland. The university has sought proposals from four real estate brokerages for how they'd handle a sublease of office space Case has leased at the Halle Building, said Lisa Chiu, Case's director of media relations. Case two years ago leased 120,000 square feet in the building at 1228 Euclid Ave. but never has occupied it. Read article. (subscription required)

Who's in charge? What it takes to manage diversity

The Scientist, magazine of the life sciences, November 2006 issue

Ten years ago, a chief diversity officer or vice president of diversity was almost unheard of, but today about one in five Fortune 1000 companies have diversity managers, according to DiversityInc cofounder Luke Visconti. There are no hard or fast qualifications for the job, diversity managers and consultants agree. Most have a background in human resources, says AstraZeneca senior director of diversity Orlando Ceaser. However, Ceaser's own training lies in sales and marketing, Wyeth vice president of diversity Daphne Mobley is a veterinarian and scientist by training, and Case Western Reserve University faculty diversity officer Beth McGee is an associate professor of theater and dance. The Plain Dealer, November 25, 2006 (Letter to the editor)

I am an alumna of Western Reserve University, class of 1956, on my annual visit to Northeast Ohio to see my family. Each year, I am angered when I see stories in the Plain Dealer, or elsewhere, referring to my alma mater as "Case." Read article.

University Circle open to suggestions

The Plain Dealer, November 20, 2006

Greek community placed under scrutinizing spotlight

The Observer, November 10, 2006

With 30 percent of all undergraduates members of a Greek organization on campus, it's obvious that fraternities and sororities are an essential part of life at Case. Case Greeks have strived to promote the positive aspects of Greek Life through their philanthropic efforts, academic achievements, and leadership roles. Last week though, the harmony within the Greek system was broken when it was decided that the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity, an established chapter at Case since 1905, would lose its house on Southside and no longer be recognized by the university due to past history and alcohol violations. A resurgence in Cleveland

New York Times, November 8, 2006

According to research by the Brookings Institution, the potential for high-wage job growth is less likely to be found in traditional downtowns than in districts like University Circle, areas referred to as "eds and meds" for their typical concentration of educational and medical institutions. There are ripples of commercial development activity as a result of collaboration among University Circles partners. Case Western Reserve University recently announced it was negotiating with MRN Ltd. and Zaremba Inc., two local developers, to turn a site of eight and a half acres into a mixed-use arts, retail and residential district. The $100 million project would produce more than 400,000 new square feet on Euclid Avenue, the main street that connects University Circle to downtown. "This is different in its orientation. Really this is a community project sponsored by Case and developed privately by a team," said Russell Berusch, vice president for commercial real estate at Case. Read article.

Free birds

Inside Higher Ed, November 6, 2006

Just as campuses once banned non-union grapes or stocked Nicaraguan coffee, colleges are increasingly choosing cage-free eggs, responding to student activists' appeals for socially conscious consumer choices and endorsing what they call a sustainable farming practice that gives chickens more room to roam. Among the colleges that have made the switch are Dartmouth and Oberlin Colleges; Case Western Reserve University... Dining service managers cited a variety of reasons for deciding to purchase the cage-free eggs, which are often significantly more expensive -- at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Delmar Crim, the culinary director, said the eggs cost an extra 40 percent. Among the reasons identified include the efforts of student activists, stated institutional concerns about animal welfare and environmental issues, and a desire to provide higher-quality, better-tasting products.
