Science produced headlines in 2006: The public and politicians, shocked by high gasoline prices, rediscovered alternative energy during the spring and summer. "We've been ignoring alternative energy for so long, bioethanol, and wind energy is becoming quietly competitive," said Tom Zawodzinski, a fuel cell researcher at Case Western Reserve University. Later in the article, Dan Akerib, a physicist and dark-matter researcher at Case, is quoted on the topic of dark matter, which is considered to be the glue of the universe. Read article.

Ohio awards nearly $168 million in high-tech grants

Nine high-tech projects will receive a total of about $168 million in grants from the Ohio Third Frontier program, including a $60 million award to the Cleveland Clinic for a new heart research center, the state announced. Swagelok Co., a Solon-based business that makes industrial valves and fittings, received $5.5 million to work with Case Western Reserve University on its patented process of carburizing steel—using carbon to make steel harder and less vulnerable to corrosion—at a low temperature. Six projects get NorTech money: $1 million will help turn technology ideas into moneymakers

NorTech, the Northeast Ohio technology development organization, has distributed $1 million in grant money from the Fund for Our Economic Future to support the commercialization of six projects: A collaboration among the National Center for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, the Case Center for Imaging Research, and local companies Arteriocyte and Athersys will receive $310,000 to develop ways to improve stroke therapies. The Wright Fuel Cell Group will receive $150,000 to build portable fuel cells created with Ohio-made products. Case Western Reserve University, Graf-Tech, HydroGen, Contained Energy, Northeast Hydrogen and Chemsultants are part of the fuel cell group. Read article.

Ohio's now a leader in fuel cells

UltraCell Corp. of Livermore, Calif., plans to invest $74 million to build a factory near Dayton that will hire 360 people over the next four years and create more jobs for Ohio-based suppliers. The project has received grants, loans and tax breaks. The company is working with the University of Dayton and Case Western Reserve University. Read article.

Rumors fly regarding CSE accreditation

On October 18, all Case School of Engineering (CSE) faculty, staff, and undergraduate students received an e-mail from Dean of Engineering Robert F. Savinell providing an update on the school's accreditation process. Some of this information was misconstrued and soon rumors were flying on forum.case.edu that the school was losing accreditation, which would affect not only graduates but also future recruitment. These rumors were untrue. As Savinell stated in the e-mail, the school expects all programs to receive continued accreditation next summer. Read article.
