Standardizing ICU care would not harm patients

Resources used by different physicians in intensive care units (ICU) vary widely without influencing patient outcomes, according to a report in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Garland and colleagues from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center investigated the discretionary costs, ICU length of stay, and hospital mortality for 1,184 patients cared for by nine different intensive care specialists.
