Snow and Helplessness

large_snow_rant.jpg

Feeling a little out of control this week! Over the weekend one of my cupboards was infiltrated by grain beetles. (EEEEWWWWWWWWW.) We are buried under a mass of snow (and recently named "worst snow city" in the country! aces!) plus the weather has knocked out my cable and internet since Monday.

Thus, this quotation that I read the other day feels particularly apt.

"An absolutely certain way in those days to draw down on one a wretched fate was to claim superiority in anything over any deity; nevertheless, people were perpetually doing so."
Edith Hamilton, Mythology

I get it, universe! Plagues, storms and deprivation have done their jobs. I AM YOUR PAWN. (Now can I have my cable and Internet back? I'm really wondering what happened on Lost.)

Sunshine Cleaning (2008)

A pretty modest comedy from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine, which suffers from the comparison, and from being a bit too miserable to really be funny. Still, there are great performances from Amy Adams and Emily Blunt.

Random Harvest (1942)

So you have Greer Garson and Ronald Colman. She’s a life-affirming singer, and he’s an amnesiac fresh off the boat from World War 1. They fall in love, get married, and have a baby. I’ve been seeing a lot of tearjerkers lately, but this one was above-average.

New blog!

I have embraced the inevitable. I’ve started a blog.

I figured as along as I have free space through school, I would use it. It’ll give me a chance to keep up my recreational writing (i.e. the writing that’s not getting graded, which is the overwhelming majority of what I write at the moment) and it’ll be fun to establish a presence on the web.

So, what can you expect of the blog? Mostly book reviews, probably, but also some blathering about movies and TV, teaching, chocolate, lake-effect snow, and even an occasional Skylar story.

I spent a long time thinking about my blog title--probably that's not something I want to admit--but in case you're curious, it's (obviously) a pun on "serial monogamist". It came to me first thing this morning when I tried to convince Jeremy that there was a goddess of cereal and he tried to convince me that I was completely wrong. [Cue Googling sounds]

Thus, I present the overseer of the blog: Ceres, Roman goddess of grain.

Anyway, hope everyone out in Internetland enjoys it!
