Tramping Adventures, Thu Apr 13, 2006

So I've made it back yesterday from my 7 day wilderness adventures on the Routeburn and Caples track in Mt. Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks on the South Island of NZ. It costs ALOT to buy and develop film here; I should have bought a digital camera. I still haven't uploaded all of them. And I'm not that good and taking pictures. I wish Tony was here. He's better at that, and would have been a good tramping partner. Tony, you suck for not dropping out of school.

Photos here. Sorry, no time for a fancy preview.

Basically, I have no time on this stupid internet cafe pc, so here's the very short version... The night before I was going to cross the upper basin and Harris saddle (the highest point of the track, way above treeline), it snowed a lot. The warden closed the track for avalanche safety reasons. So, I walked most of the way back down the trail until I stopped for lunch and then heard that it was reopened not an hour after I left!

I almost ran all the way back up to the start of the Routeburn Falls (which is the steepest part) and then made it over the saddle with snow everywhere. Great views! The big downside was the track was covered in slush and entire sections were underwater. Hiking over snowy rocks is probably the most exhausting thing one can do. Overall, I walked over 20 km from 9:30 to 5:30. I was so beat, but I made it.

I'm out of time, so enjoy the pics!

Great photo of you! Take more so we can keep up on the growth of your facial hair. You are going to have to be our guide when we all go as a family in 4 years. I know the photo's don't due to the place justice but you'll always have the images with you in your mind.....

It's great to read about your adventures and to look at the pictures. I agree with your mom--we'd like to see more photos with you in them. Grandpa

Yeah, I haven't taken any of myself. I just don't think of it, I guess, and a lot of the time I'm by myself on the mountain.

I'll make sure to get more action shots of me doing fun, crazy things :)

Currently, the beard has been changed, but not trimmed. Trimmers here are expensive!
