Warbirds over Wanaka Airshow, Sat Apr 15, 2006

Happy Easter!

I forgot about Easter until someone on the Caples track reminded me, and I discovered that everyone and their dog travels to the Wanaka/Queenstown area for the biannual airshow at Wanaka. They have old WWII planes like spitfires, hurricanes, mustangs, Me-109s, etc. and some WWI biplanes that sound like flying Harley Davidsons. I also got a good pic of an F-111 doing a dump and burn move. But the spitfire sounds great as it flys by; Wes would be jealous, I think.

I hitched a ride from Doug and his son Mitchell back from the airshow. They live in Invercargill and the very south end of the South Island. He took me to Wanaka and showed me around, and also gave me around to my hostel and helped me transport all my stuff from my old hostel to my new one! Really nice guy, stereotypical Kiwi hospitality--he gave me his card and wanted me to call him when I was done with my tramping. He'll put me up for a night or two before I move up the West Coast to the famous NZ glaciers.

Hitching down to Te Anau today to start the Kepler track tomorrow. So far, I've spent tons and tons of money, but I loved tramping and I'm willing to spend another $150 to do some more. Only gonna have this one chance, right?
