A New Home
The environment that residence college life brings is a new experience for students. Eleven by thirteen foot rooms replace the comforts and conveniences of homes that we have ventured from. After settling into my own new dorm room recently, along with the majority of the class of 2011, I have seen that most doors are adorned with some form of writing. To a certain extent I have come to identify certain people by what they have on and in these entryways; their own unique postings give an acquaintance such as myself a glimpse into their personality and allow their individuality to stand out. White boards, posters, pictures and clothing along with profane language and song lyrics are merely a few of the vantage points to the endless possibilities of what I have seen people post thus far. Some of these postings are reminders of what was left behind at home, while many others are indications of new beginnings. The mixture of these new beginnings and old experiences define for me what “life at home” means in the university.
Taking a stroll around the floor of my residence hall certain doorways stand out to me. One of my neighbors down the hall sent her roommate a note, which was then posted. In the note were a collage of pictures, one of a cartoon, one of a favorite pastime, and a snapshot when she was a young girl. View imageThe pictures describe the girl’s extroverted and colorful personality along with showing parts of her life that would otherwise be unknown. Looking in another door I saw posters from movies along with concert venues of a favorite band. These posters, much like the letter that was posted on the door, show the person’s interests, personality, and previous experiences. One other item I saw on many doors recently was that of campaign paraphernalia. Positions were being opened for first year students in Undergraduate Student Government along with Residential Housing Association and the various students (me included) competing for positions had created flyers to bolster their campaigns. Pictures and slogans bearing credentials and new opportunities filled these sheets of paper illustrating new beginnings students were venturing into. Looking into yet another door I saw a Case sweatshirt hanging from a bed frame. Even such an ordinary occurrence as this symbolizes a new venture a student is delving into.
Before I left for college I was accustomed to having an academic life at school apart from a life at home. The influences and new experiences that were previously only in the hallways and walls at my high school now bombard me every time I leave “home”. The two lives that I seemed to have are now rolled into one; I am living in an area of new beginnings where I was once in an area of old experiences. All of the “postings” that I have observed in my few weeks on campus fit into one of these two categories. The old experiences a person has help carry them into their new endeavors, and the new endeavors are jumping points for future aspirations. One of the most difficult tasks of starting college is the task of having to mix both categories into a new sense of what “life at home” means for each individual, but once a balance is found the transition into this new living environment is one of endless possibilities.
