Case should pick its speakers more responsibly
This is from the observer (campus newspaper)
To the Editor:
Case's University Programming Board, which funds its programs through our mandatory student activity fees, has announced proudly that it will be bringing Harry Belafonte to campus. The famed singer has been renowned for years as one of the essential figures of the early Civil Rights movement. As the event's publicity e-mail noted, "It was he who bailed Martin Luther King out of a Birmingham jail…It was he who helped to organize the March on Washington. Harry Belafonte railed against apartheid in South Africa." These accomplishments are great and any American who did so much to further the lives of so many deserves great accolades, but the e-mail gives little indication of what Belafonte has been doing recently. Let me give you a taste.
Last August he was asked what he thought about so many blacks holding high-level positions in the Bush administration. He called these public servants "black tyrants." He then made this comparison: "Hitler had a lot of Jews high up in the hierarchy of the Third Reich." Excuse me? Belafonte considers the Bush Administration analogous to the Third Reich, and his black colleagues acquiescent to tyranny. Belafonte continued this line of thinking last weekend by comparing the Department of Homeland Security to the Nazi Gestapo.
A few weeks ago he was in Venezuela meeting with Fidel Castro's good buddy Hugo Chavez. He proudly proclaimed to those present and millions more on television that President Bush is "the greatest terrorist in the world."
I understand that political diversity is essential to a well-functioning academic institution. I have no problem with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Leonardo DiCaprio, Jerry Springer, and Dennis Kucinich visiting campus, even though I agree with them on almost nothing. But do we need to pay thousands of students' valuable dollars to listen to Harry Belafonte compare the leader of the free world to Hitler? I don't care what anyone thinks about the president's policies and beliefs: comparing him to Hitler and Osama is simply disgusting. I am not holding my breath for our student programmers to invite William Buckley Jr., Thomas Sowell, or Rich Lowry to campus, but do we really need to spend our money this way? Were all of the thoughtful speakers booked this spring? I hope that all Case students will show UPB how we feel about this use of student activity money and avoid this speech.

Oil Companies post biggest profits ever
Ah... the beauty of capitalism. Supply + demand = price. The demand drops... so does the price. Of course... everyone is going to complain that they have to pay 2.25 a gallon to run their SUV's... but they are the problem. The beauty of capitalism is that if as a nation, we conserve gas more, the price will go down. SUVs getting 0.000005 miles per gallon make the demand much higher. Rather than complaining to Congress trying to get them to take a Communist stance on gas, Americans should buy more efficient cars. This will lower the price in the long run.
Can the government help? Yes. We need to increase domestic drilling and refining. We haven't built a new refinery in many years. We need to drill in ANWR... I know the tree huggers hate it... but if you look at the statistics...The Caribou population has NOT decreased around the other pipelines. There are mounting political tensions with Iran that can greatly reduce our supply. The population has actually increased. The fact of the matter is, we need to reduce dependence on foreign oil. Our economy will be more stable.
State vs. Terrorism
One big confusion in this wiretap case is the fact that Osama's terrorist organization is not a country. However, just because one cannot point out and say "this is the region of al qaeda," does not mean that al qaeda is immune to anything that is brought upon other enemies of the state. Is this a different enemy than we are used to? Yes. It is. However, we cannot let this change effect the way we fight the war. Al Qaeda is spread throughout the world. We must do just as we did against all other enemies in a time of war. We must spy on them to get an edge. If we know what they are trying to do, we stand a better chance of stopping them. Do we need to get a warrant to spy on Osama in Afghanistan? No. Should we have to get a warrant if he was in the United States? No... he is an enemy of the state. We should not force the government to do ANYTHING that can jeopardize the safety of the American people.
Al Qaeda wants to kill you. They want to kill me. We are fighting an enemy that will not hesitate to kill thousands of innocent civilian lives. We cannot let the fact that they are not a country stop us from fighting this war. If the COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF determines that getting a warrant could jeopardize a wire tap, then that is what we should do. It's legal and unless you're talked to Osama this morning... you have nothing to worry about.
Rumsfeld: The troops are not spread too thin
Sorry libs...
Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld on Wednesday disputed reports suggesting that the U.S. military is stretched thin and close to a snapping point from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, asserting "the force is not broken."
Without wiretaps... I have an idea...
It seems that if the dems have their way... the United States is the perfect place to run a command post for terrorism. Apparently... we're only allowed to wiretap terrorists that aren't in our country. Once they get in... it's like a base in a game of tag. We just can't touch them.
If you're talking to Osama... I have no problem in the government wiretapping you so that you can't blow me up.
The allegations that Bush is breaking the law are ridiculous. We are in a time of war. Just because our enemy cannot be represented by a country, that does not make them immune. They are enemies of the state. We must do everything we can to stop them.
It's time for Bush to start concentrating on Social Security reform
We have a majority in the house and senate. There is no reason why we can't get Social Security reforms through. We need to get together as a party and develop a privatized social security plan. If this does not happen... I will keep dumping huge chunks of my paycheck in the garbage. Social Security is broken... it's time to do what we need to do. Now that Alito is confirmed, it is time to focus on the economic well-being of my generation and the generations of the future.
Only 16% firm on Hillary for President. 2 words: THANK GOD!
THANK GOD!!!!

CNNGALLUP SHOCK POLL: ONLY 16% FIRM ON HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT Wed Jan 25 2006 10:50:26 ETMost voters now say there's no way they'd vote for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton if she runs for president in 2008 - while just 16 percent are firmly in her camp, a stunning new poll shows.
CNNGALLUP found that 51 percent say they definitely won't vote for Clinton (D-N.Y.) in 2008, another 32 percent might consider it, and only 16 percent vow to back her. That means committed anti-Hillary voters outnumber pro-Hillary voters by 3-1. The poll suggests she can forget about crossover votes - 90 percent of Republicans and 75 percent of conservatives say there's no way they'd back her.
Meanwhile, 46% said they would oppose Secretary of State Rice if she ran for President - a step Rice has repeatedly said she won't take.
LA Times: "I DON'T SUPPORT our troops"
This is absolutely disgusting...
I'm not advocating that we spit on returning veterans like they did after the Vietnam War, but we shouldn't be celebrating people for doing something we don't think was a good idea. All I'm asking is that we give our returning soldiers what they need: hospitals, pensions, mental health and a safe, immediate return. But, please, no parades.
First ammendment rights at risk
Dear Friends and Colleagues-In the last few days, Case Housing and Residence Life has instituted a ban on our First Amendment right of the Freedom of Speech. This new rule prevents us from speaking our minds and forces us to conform to what this administration believes is "correct and just"
Talking with Lisa Marsalek, Associate Director of Housing, this is a "protocol," not a policy. If a Residential Assistant directly or indirectly hears an individual making what Case deems to be a derogatory comment (such as "that's gay"), that person is to be lectured. DEPENDING UPON THE ENVIRONMENT AND SITUATION, this could result in a writeup.
Who, then, determines a derogatory comment? If one wears a pro-life t-shirt, could Case have RA's lecture to them of the possible offensive nature of such a garment? If a person chooses to carry around a book by Freud, could one be lectured on how Case finds the sexual nature of such a text to be a potential problem? Is Case the final arbiter of morality and righteousness?
While some may think this is a moral action and some may not, the fact remains that Case SHOULD NOT limit our rights both as citizens and students. No matter what your political affiliation, the First Amendment is important all of us as individuals.
Here's what we can do. Community Hour (12:30 to 2:00) on this Friday, January 20th, gather in front of Adelbert Hall (facing the Quad) and let's show this Administration that we truly do have a voice, loud and clear.
Pass this on to those who want to make something big happen.

Kansas evolution poll shows majority want change
Kansas evolution poll shows majority want change
A majority of Kansans polled say they want public schools to either allow evolution to be criticized or teach other theories alongside it in science classes. And more than one-third of the respondents say the Bible's story of creation is the best explanation for the origin of life.
Those findings are part of a poll about evolution conducted June 14-16 for The Wichita Eagle and the Kansas City Star.
The results offer encouragement to proponents of the state's proposed new science standards, which are critical of how evolution is taught.

A majority believe God or a supreme being played a role in the origin of man.

Yet ANOTHER positive economic indicator
Once again we have reached a statistical milestone with our economy. How long will it take for the liberals in America to accept that Bush's economic plan is working?
The number of U.S. workers making new claims for unemployment benefits tumbled unexpectedly last week to 271,000, their lowest level in nearly six years, the government said on Thursday in a report suggesting a robust la
Bush needs to stop planting trees
So... they released a report showing that plants are a huge source of greenhouse gases leading to global warming. That's clearly Bush's fault. He totally planted all those trees in the black neighborhoods of New Orleans to warm the air and pull the hurricane right towards it.
Kennedy guilty of McCarthyism
Senator Kennedy is guilty of McCarthyism says Pat Buchanan. This article is an interesting read and it outlines how ridiculous Kennedy's allegations were.
It was during the second day of questioning that Sam Alito's wife broke down, wept and left the room after hearing Sen. Kennedy imply that her husband was a bigot. What was Kennedy's evidence?
In 1985, Sam Alito belonged to Concerned Alumni of Princeton. He had joined to protest the ouster of ROTC from campus. Alito was neither an officer nor active, but like future Sen. Bill Bradley, he joined.
On dems Kennedy's terms... Senator Kennedy is a chauvinist
He better be careful how he is making associations.
Conservative activists are eager to point out that Sen Ted Kennedy was on shaky ground accusing the Judge Alito of associating with people opposed to the inclusion of women in private institutions, the WASHINGTON TIMES is fronting on Thursday. The eight-term senator belonged to an all-male social club -- the Owl -- at Harvard University. The Owl refused to admit women until it was forced to do so during the 1980s, according to records kept by the HARVARD CRIMSON, the student newspaper.
Alito attacks fail
It turns out those documents that Kennedy wanted SO bad actually did not contain Alito's name ANYWHERE within them. Sorry dems... another failed scandal creation.
Senate lawyers came up empty handed early this morning after reviewing four boxes of materials pertaining to the Concerned Alumni of Princeton that Sen. Edward M. Kennedy demanded be subpoenaed before proceeding with the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Samuel A. Alito Jr.
"Judge Alito's name never appeared in any document," said Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, who managed to secure access to the documents at the Library of Congress without any subpoena. The search, conducted by a bipartisan group of Senate lawyers, dealt a blow to some of the final Democratic opposition to Judge Alito.
Democrats, led by the Massachusetts Democrat, have questioned Judge Alito's commitment to civil rights and equality for women because he said he belonged to the group on a 1985 job application. Democrats say the group is racist and anti-woman for its opposition to coeducation at Princeton University and essays that appeared in its magazine, Prospect.
Judge Alito disavowed the magazine and said he doesn't recall every associating with the group. He said he assumes he must have joined the group because it also objected to the expulsion of the ROTC program from Princeton's campus.
The CAP records contained cancelled checks for subscriptions to the group's magazine, but none from Judge Alito. It also contained lists of board directors and contributors.
"The files contain minutes and attendance records from CAP meetings in 1983 and 1984, just before Samuel Alito listed the organization on his job application, but Samuel Alito did not attend any of those meetings," Mr. Specter said. "He's not even mentioned in the minutes."
Armed forces meet recruiting goals for 7th month in a row
According to the Pentagon, the Army recruited 741 soldiers in December, 6 percent more than its goal. The Navy recruited 2,022, 1 percent more than its goal; the Air Force recruited 2,209, also 1 percent more than its goal; and the Marine Corps recruited 1,717, 6 percent more than its goal.
