Obama/McCain... polar opposites on many issues

Why am I know backing McCain?

During the primary, I stated that I John McCain was wrong on many issues. This is still true; however, he is right on many issues that Barack Obama is wrong on. Do I still think McCain is too liberal? You bet… but the difference between him an Obama is very clear.

Socialized Medicine:
Barack Obama is for socialized medicine and McCain is not.
As followers of this blog would notice, I am adamantly opposed to socialized medicine. I have a chronic disease that is getting the best treatment in the world despite my parents’ low income. I do not want to see the entire country get their health care determined by statistical models. I don’t want the cheapest treatments. I want the best treatments.

The war in Iraq:
Obama says pull out and let the Iraqi people suffer. McCain says finish the job.
We have won the war in Iraq. I know that fact is really difficult for many liberals to swallow. We have had an 80% reduction in Iraqi AND American casualties. Iraqi militias now run 45% of the missions in Iraq. 13 of the 15 benchmarks for success have been met. There have been more deaths in Afghanistan than Iraq in the last two months.

The Supreme Court:
Obama wants liberal activist judges. McCain wants constitutionalist judges.
McCain wants to put judges on the bench who will strictly interpret the constitution. This leaves legal decisions to the legislative bodies who have to answer to the people. I am sick and tired of the liberal judges on the court destroying our constitution. We have a legislative body and an amendment procedure for a reason.

Taxes:
Obama wants to raise taxes. McCain wants to lower taxes.
Anyone who has taken even the simplest economics course learns that taxes lead to inefficiencies. Europe, where the taxation is much higher than here, they have a 15% unemployment rate. That is triple ours. Obama wants to double the capital gains tax. Planning on dabbling in the stock market? Forget about it if Obama is president. You will now pay double taxes on that sucker. Making over $100k? Be prepared to pay more social security taxes. Under 40 and making 100k? Be prepared to invest more money into social security that you will get a 0% return on. Running a small business? Be prepared for a barrage of additional taxes when the Bush tax cuts are rolled back. Making over $250k? You better start stretching your hands… you’re going to be paying more additional taxes than you even want to think about. Are you an owner of an oil company? Be ready to hand over your profit despite the fact that you are making considerably less than many other industries percentage wise. This is just the tip of the iceberg. An Obama presidency will be a step towards socialism. A McCain presidency will be a step out of the economic troubles.

Experience:
What has Obama accomplished? Sure… he talks well. But what has he actually done. Lets compare:

Youth:
Obama’s youth consisted of cocaine and marijuana use. This is not slander, he has admitted this in his book.
McCain’s youth consisted of military service. He was a commander.

Time in the government:
Obama spent 7 years in the Illinois senate and never spearheaded any major legislation. He spent 1 year in the senate before abandoning it to run for president. He never spearheaded a major piece of legislation

McCain has been in Congress since the 80’s. He has spearheaded many major bills. He has shown an ability to work with other parties to get things done.

Obama has not accomplished anything in his life besides getting elected. Sure, he talks well, but does that give him enough to lead the free world? I don’t think so. People have said that McCain’s military service doesn’t make him ready to be commander in chief. If that doesn’t make him ready, how ready is Obama? He has not accomplished anything. His greatest accomplishment was setting the record for the most “present” votes in the Illinois senate. That is quite an achievement.

Entitlement Programs (Welfare):
McCain – reduce it. Obama – increase it.
One of the best things Bill Clinton did in office was reform welfare. He reduced the amount of money spent on welfare. The military budget is 15% of the nation’s budget. We need someone who is going to look to address that other 85%.

Social Security:
McCain – private accounts; Obama – raise taxes
This one is a no brainer. Look at the Ohio teachers’ union. Their privatized social security is awesome. They can retire after 30 years with 80% of their salary. I want that deal. With Social Security as it stands… I’m getting nothing.

Oil Drilling:
Obama don’t drill. McCain drill away.
We import 10 million barrels of oil per day. We can produce 1 million barrels a day in 5 years f we pump oil in the gulf (not visible from shore!). This would reduce our imports by 10%. We can reduce it by another 10% if we drill in ANWR. In addition to lowering the cost of oil, this will lower our dependence on foreign oil. This will keep our oil money in our economy. Why should we pay a premium to terrorist harboring countries when we have it on our soil? Why should we buy oil from China when they are pumping it out of the gulf? What happens if Israel and Iran go to war? What happens if that engulfs the whole region? We will have nowhere to get oil from. It is more than economics. Drilling for our own oil is a matter of national security.
