Great Lakes Burning River Fest highlights Week 2 of Creating Cleveland

Events of the Week(end)

Burning River Fest '07
Join the Great Lakes Brewing Company this Saturday in their yearly festival of promoting environmental awareness at Wendy Park on Whiskey Island (just off the Edgewater Park exit on Route 2). Whiskey Island features scenic views of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga. There will be live music, plenty of eco-friendly displays and exhibits, performances and demonstrations, tons of food to sample, educational discussions, and the ability to sail on Lake Erie on the Tall Ship Appledore V Schooner (reservation needed for this), including a sunset trip, as well as the ability to cruise around the Coast Guard station. Tickets are $5 in advance (through TOMORROW (8/9) only!), $7 on the day of. Kids 10 and under are free. Click here for all the details. Coolers and pets are prohibited. The festival runs from 1-9:30 PM.

Important Travel Advisory regarding the Riverfest:
For the first time, RTA will also be providing shuttle service from the West Blvd. Red Line station from 12:30 to 10 PM, as parking will be limited at the park, though it is free. Parking is also limited at the station, so you should arrive by RTA or park at one of the bigger RTA park-n-ride lots (Triskett, Brookpark, W. 150th on the red line, or Green Road in Shaker Heights on the Green Line). Other shuttle buses will run from Edgewater Park to the festival, and from Max Hayes HS (4600 Detroit Road) to the festival.

Wade Oval Wednesdays
Come experience the heart of University Circle with Wade Oval Wednesdays. WOW consists of free outdoor concerts each Wednesday evening on Wade Oval, along with other various food vendors, activities, and artisans which have booths throughout the summer (until Aug. 29). In conjunction with WOW, the Botanical Gardens hold Gourmet in the Garden, which is a cooking demonstration from 6-7 PM free with Garden admission (which is free one time for all Case students each year). This Wednesday will feature the Baricelli Inn. The Cleveland Museum of Art will be the featured institution this week. Click here for details.

Coventry Street Fair
The Fair returns on Thursday 8/9 from 6-9 PM. The street will be closed to feature music, art, a farmer’s market, vendors, jugglers, etc. Something Dada, one of Cleveland’s improv comedy groups will be performing on the main stage at 6, andReuben’s Train plays on the main stage from 7-9. There will also be hands-on projects sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Muddling Mojitos 101
If credit was only offered for this class... Rumbar, the new patio bar and grill next to the InterContinental Suites is teaching the traditional Cuban art of making mojitos. Enrollment is $25, and includes creating and enjoying 3 mojitos (traditional, raspberry, and peach) with appetizers, and you get to keep your own muddler (the instrument used to mash the lime, sugar, and mint leaves) to boot.

Midwest Reggae Fest
This event returns for their 16th year starting, running from Friday through the weekend. Features Lucky Dube, Morgan Heritage, Ken Boothe and the Meditations; also many local acts performing. Details are here.

Perseid Meteor Watch
Cleveland Metroparks will host an event from 10 PM to midnight on Saturday 8/11 at the Meadows Picnic area. Naturalists John Miller and Sharon Hosko will be available to answer questions. Registration is required. Call 440-526-1012 for more information.

Walk and Roll Cleveland
Every Sunday in August, MLK Drive will be closed from University Circle to the Lakefront so that people can enjoy Rockefeller Park and the many Cultural Gardens. It will also take place on Sunday September 23, to coincide with Sparx in the City’s big end of the summer celebration. Get details here.

Science Café Cleveland
A lively informal monthly scientific discussion on the second Monday of each month at Great Lakes Brewing Company. This month will cover the debate of human evolution, and will feature Case’s very own Dr. Simpson (Dept. of Anatomy) and Dr. Bruce Latimer from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Appetizers are provided.

Cinema at the Square
This annual film series returns as Playhouse Square shows all-time classics for $5. Get info on all the films here.

Mark your place in history as this award-winning exhibit featured on NPR comes to Cleveland for 3 weeks (Aug. 2-25). They are here to capture personal stories of America, whether sweet, sad, funny, or touching. Select stories will air on NPR. The Booth is inside an Airstream trailer parked at the Rock Hall. Sokolowski's University Inn
This long time city establishment has been a staple of Tremont, and the entire city of Cleveland. Established in 1923, Sokolowski’s is a 3rd generation family business that is famous for its pierogies, kielbasa, and other Polish-American delicacies. Recently featured on the Early Show’s broadcast from Cleveland, it has also been on several other network food spots. Don’t let the cafeteria style-serving fool you; this is a can’t miss when it comes to pierogies. Get information on their hours of operation and menu here.

India Garden
With its new outdoor patio and 5/$10 Corona specials this month celebrating its one-year anniversary, India Garden is anything but the ordinary Indian restaurant that you find elsewhere in Cleveland. The 7 day a week $7.95 lunch buffet is a great deal, and sometimes features their Indo-Chinese specialty dishes, something that is new to the Northeast Ohio area. You can call ahead (216-221-0676) to find out what’s on the buffet menu. India Garden is located at 18405 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, just off of the McKinley Avenue exit.
