Taste of Cleveland and Cleveland Air Show are the big draws of the weekend...
I hope some of you were able to attend last weekend's City Xpressionz before the rains came down. Click here for pictures of this year's festival, compliments of Heidi Cool. Special thanks to Marielena for the submission of this weekend's 2nd Annual "Salsa en Blanco".

I hope many of you are getting the word out about this blog… it's now over 900 visitors through 4 weeks, with over 4500 hits. Read below for this week's events, including downtown's Dragon Boat Festival and a free showing of "The Brave One" starring Jodie Foster.
Events of the Week(end)
Cleveland Air Show
This annual Labor Day favorite at the Burke Lakefront Airport is a must see, if you have been in Cleveland for some time and have not yet gone. The Dealfinder has been 2 or 3 times and it has never failed to wow him. The annual highlight is usually the fleet of Blue Angels which closes the show each afternoon. Click here for all of the information on the schedules, ticket prices, and anything else you need regarding the Air Show. If you want to avoid the ticket cost, you can see it for FREE by driving to the neighborhood directly across I-90 from the airport, and sitting on the sloping lawn with hundreds more onlookers. You can access this area by heading north towards the lake to the area between E. 38th and E. 49th streets. Both E. 40th and E. 49th continue to that area from Chester.
Taste of Cleveland
This annual Cleveland food fanatic favorite returns to Tower City for the 12th time on Labor Day weekend with a succulent sampling of Cleveland's best food. Live entertainment (free with admission) will include Donny Osmond, Michael Stanley & the Resonators, Macy Gray, and The Romantics ("What I Like About You"). There will be lots of prizes and giveaways, as well as demonstrations, karaoke, and eating contests. Save $2 with a Giant Eagle advantage card, or buy one, get one admission free with coupon from Donato's. $2 discount coupon and full details are available here. Oktoberfest
The Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds host a full authentic German Oktoberfest with food, music, dancing, and of course, beer. Check out the Art Market, Vintage/Antique Car Show, German Dog Show, and more. Great Lakes Oktoberfest
This festival begins at 4 PM Friday and runs through Saturday. While featuring Live music at Great Lakes Brewing company, a German-inspired menu will be served up by the restaurant with a “Keep the Stein” special, along with their traditional Oktoberfest brew. Carlos Jones
A Cleveland reggae pioneer performs in the Summer in the Courtyard series at the Cleveland Museum of Art this Friday at 5:30 PM. Enjoy the island-inspired grooves while you visit the museum! Click here for details.

Larchmere Sidewalk Sale
Stroll on Larchmere Road in Shaker Heights and peruse the offerings of the last big sale of the season for the area. The biennial sale takes place on both the Saturday preceding Memorial Day as the one preceding Labor Day. Click here for details.
Dragon Boat Festival
This festival will feature dragon boats, the world's largest flat-water racing canoes, which are traditionally manned by 20 oarsmen and date back 3,000 years in China. The regatta will last 2 days through the flats and be accompanied by martial arts demos, acrobatics, and Asian cuisine. Be at the Nautica Complex for opening ceremonies at 11 AM and race action from noon-5 PM both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is FREE. Click here for details or call (440)808-2288. Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market
On Sunday at 10 AM, the Farmers Market hosts Pearl of the Orient as the chef and the Wallace Coleman Band as live entertainment. Live cooking demonstrations begin at 11 AM. Zocalo Mexican Grill and Tequileria
Imagine making your way down East Fourth Street, turning into a narrow, winding alleyway, ultimately arriving in a lively Mexican town square. This long-awaited addition to the E. 4th Street neighborhood will finally give the downtown area the Mexican hotspot it has been lacking. Originally set to open on Cinco de Mayo 2007, Zocalo will feature the ultimate experience as the first of its kind in the country, with tableside guacamole creation, tortillas freshly pressed in the dining area, fresh tortillas, a tequila bar with 85 different types of tequila in a cantina-style tequila tasting room, and seating for 180. Free movie screenings for next week
I just wanted to let you know about a couple of movie screenings that you can pick up passes for today, but unfortunately the blog host site was down this morning. For those of you that get this soon, you can still pick up passes to The Brothers Solomon (see details below). City Xpressionz, Slavic Village Festival, and Silk opening highlight weekend...
Thanks to Heidi for the submission of this weekend's Urban City Xpressionz festival in Ohio City. The Dealfinder personally attended it last year, and can attest that it is worth seeing.
I apologize for the delay of the update this week. I have been extremely busy this week, and next week should be back on time (Wednesday) again. I also have a new email address (createcleveland@case.edu) where people can email suggestions or comments about the blog.
I hope many of you are getting the word out about this blog… it's now up to 668 visitors through 3 weeks, with over 3000 hits in just over 3 weeks. I hope many of you that were able to take in one of the various festivals going on in the area last weekend before the weather made it difficult. There's plenty more in store this week, including a free screening of "Balls of Fury" (read below).

Urban City Xpressionz
Cleveland Public Art presents this 6th annual aerosol and urban art festival on Sat 8/25 from 10AM - 7PM. Artists, breakdancers, MCs, and musicians from around the region are invited to Ohio City’s Market Square Park to exhibit their work and battle for cash and prizes. This no-cost event is a unique experience for participants and spectators -- celebrating urban street culture with local and regional aerosol artists, b-boy/b-girl battles, and 9 hours of live music. 30th Annual Slavic Village Harvest Festival
Come enjoy Slavic heritage, as this festival kicks off its 30th year on Saturday at 1 PM. You can enjoy delicious food, take in the pierogi eating contest, see the 19th annual kielbasa cookoff, and catch plenty of polka music and dancers in Cleveland's Slavic Village. Wade Oval Wednesdays
Come experience the heart of University Circle with Wade Oval Wednesdays. WOW consists of free outdoor concerts each Wednesday evening on Wade Oval, along with other various food vendors, activities, and artisans which have booths throughout the summer (until Aug. 29). In conjunction with WOW, the Botanical Gardens hold Gourmet in the Garden, which is a cooking demonstration from 6-7 PM free with Garden admission (which is free one time for all Case students each year). Silk Nightclub Opening
One of the largest, if not the largest, nightclubs between New York and Chicago opens on the west bank of the Flats with a bang. The Studio salon in Ohio City is holding its first Annual Doggie Dip, where you can get your dog groomed or washed for just a few dollars.

Celebrate the historic Warehouse District this Sunday, August 19, from noon until 8 PM. Over 25 local artists will be showcasing wares. Original Pancake House
This little diamond specializing in breakfast/brunch started in Portland, Oregon, and has a branch on the east side of the city on Chagrin Blvd. It can best be described as the goal of IHOP, but with a true homestyle feel.
Signature items include the Apple Pancake and the Dutch Baby, descriptions and pictures of which can be found on their website here. This east-side gem in the Shaker area is often overlooked by many who only visit the Shaker Square establishments. Burning River Fest '07
Join the Great Lakes Brewing Company this Saturday in their yearly festival of promoting environmental awareness at Wendy Park on Whiskey Island (just off the Edgewater Park exit on Route 2). Whiskey Island features scenic views of Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga. There will be live music, plenty of eco-friendly displays and exhibits, performances and demonstrations, tons of food to sample, educational discussions, and the ability to sail on Lake Erie on the Tall Ship Appledore V Schooner (reservation needed for this), including a sunset trip, as well as the ability to cruise around the Coast Guard station. Tickets are $5 in advance (through TOMORROW (8/9) only!), $7 on the day of. Kids 10 and under are free. Click here for all the details. Coolers and pets are prohibited. The festival runs from 1-9:30 PM.
Important Travel Advisory regarding the Riverfest:
For the first time, RTA will also be providing shuttle service from the West Blvd. Red Line station from 12:30 to 10 PM, as parking will be limited at the park, though it is free. Parking is also limited at the station, so you should arrive by RTA or park at one of the bigger RTA park-n-ride lots (Triskett, Brookpark, W. 150th on the red line, or Green Road in Shaker Heights on the Green Line). Other shuttle buses will run from Edgewater Park to the festival, and from Max Hayes HS (4600 Detroit Road) to the festival.

This long time city establishment has been a staple of Tremont, and the entire city of Cleveland. Established in 1923, Sokolowski’s is a 3rd generation family business that is famous for its pierogies, kielbasa, and other Polish-American delicacies. Introduction to "Creating Cleveland"
How did this blog come about?.... Well, the Dealfinder had just heard one too many times about how much Cleveland sucks and "there is nothing to do in this town" from fellow students who have not ventured outside of the friendly confines of Coventry and Cleveland Heights a whole lot. As I have been living in this town for some time, I am attempting to explore the city high and low to bring you some of the most interesting and low-cost things to do around the city on a weekly basis.
For example in the past 10 days, there have been 3-4 music festivals, an opportunity to be on the Early Show, which filmed in Cleveland last week, and an opportunity to sample the food of Tremont, which featured 15-20 restaurants in one of the best neighborhoods in the city for restaurants.
If you have any suggestions of places around town that you've used to help "create" your own Cleveland, please feel free to send them using the comments below until an email address is formed. This cozy eatery opened up at the beginning of June away from most of the other fast (and much more fattening) food options in the University Circle area. Hidden by the current construction on the Cornell Road bridge, Tea House Noodles offers a healthier alternative to the normal Qdoba, Chopstick, or Rascal House grab 'n' go lunch, for those looking to get a quick lunch after or between classes. At $4.99, their filling lunch noodle/rice bowls filled with veggies and your choice of sauce/broth are a steal, and you protein-loving lunatics can add chicken, tofu, or beans for only a $1 more. They also offer daily specials such as Asian Chicken or Tea House Pad Thai.
