Why is it that...

the only people willing to coment on blogs also have an agenda [real or perceived] of promoting their own website? Are we [active blogers] the only ones racking up each others hit count? Or, rather, have I failed to contribute anything of significance or worthy of discussion?

I'm not looking to push buttons, or publish contraversial articles. This website is aimed at informing others, and making connections with colleagues and patients. The difficulty is in measuring the success of these goals [kind of like monitoring your front-office staff while removing a crown]. How do you do this? Maybe it just takes time.

Daniel,
Here's a real comment!

I've been meaning to write about comments as well. Each week I delete numerous meaningless spam comments from my blog, approve a few that are self-promoting--but written by a human and somewhat on point--and am pleasantly surprised when I find one that is on target and meaningful.

I'm still trying to figure out which types of entries are more likely to generate comments than others. Mano Singham gets a lot of comments. I think this is because he is addressing complex issues in great detail; and these issues fall into the gray areas where people have quite disparate opinions.

On my Web Development blog (shameless link promotion here) I find that I get more real comments on topics that are more open-ended or which leave room for questions. If I'm writing a factual "how to do X" lesson, rather than a more opinion-oriented piece, I'll get fewer comments, because I just haven't left much more to discuss.

If your entries provoke the reader to disagree, add additional insight onto a topic, or ask questions I think you'll get more feedback.

On a related note, your statistics page is showing a nice growth in readership, so I think the blog is showing some success. As your blog grows and you come up with more and more different ideas I think you'll see your readership grow as well. Good luck!

In the past couple of weeks you have posted not more than 2-3 sentences. A post about how many hits you got, a post about how you have finals and now a post about how you measure the success of a blog. I am guessing that you're disappointed in your comment count? My suggestion is that you need to offer more substance.
When people read about "I have finals, see you in a week" then why do they care? They probably have finals too. Post the amount of finals and the credit hours. What classes are they? etc. That will get you more hits and more readers. Services like feedburner and technorati also help to increase readership. SDN posting will also send traffic your way. I make it a point to comment on SDN at least once a day - even if it is something stupid. I hope you dont think I lke to come here and shamelessly post my link :) Good luck with those finals and new patients!

To be frank, the better the blog, the better the comments.

I liked your post. I read a few good articles about Implant Dentistry here:
