Just a few Items
As of 11:00 am, tomorrow, we will be finished with the first 2 years of dental school [where's the Tylenol?!?!?]
There are a few topics I want to discuss briefly:
1.) Golf Day Event Schedule
2.) I need help with the official move to goingdental.com
3.) I have patients! [and need to move into the clinic]
4.) Suggested Reading before entering clinic.
So... Read on!

Why is it that...
the only people willing to coment on blogs also have an agenda [real or perceived] of promoting their own website? Are we [active blogers] the only ones racking up each others hit count? Or, rather, have I failed to contribute anything of significance or worthy of discussion?
I'm not looking to push buttons, or publish contraversial articles. This website is aimed at informing others, and making connections with colleagues and patients. The difficulty is in measuring the success of these goals [kind of like monitoring your front-office staff while removing a crown]. How do you do this? Maybe it just takes time.

The Joy of Exams
It will be a week before I can post anything of significance. Good luck on finals to one and all.
Don't forget about golf day!
You know you love it.
But, I don't know if you love it, or hate it. So tell me. Write a comment, subscribe, email me, it doesn't matter which way is best for you. All that matters to me is that I learn what kind of job I'm doing. Is this site useful to you? How's the design? Easy to navigate? Hard to navigate?
Let me know. Don't forget about golf day; first 50 to pay get a shot at "Break the Glass".

What Hits!
Just looked at my web stats for the month of March, and to my surprise, a grand total of 5688 hits! Woo-hoo!

the domain name game, part deux
After trying [sans success] to upload movable type (MT) to my new domain goingdental.com, I called support. I then learned that I must upgrade to the "deluxe" hosting package if I want to opperate MT... I don't have enough time to spend at the moment, so I am [until May] having a redirect to my Case blog. Those of you who have linked / bookmarked this page, please feel free to begin using the new domain.

the domain name game
Satisfied with the title "Going Dental", I purchased the domain -- goingdental.com. I will, by the end of May, find some way to transfer this site to that location. I have downloaded Movabletype 3.x and am hoping that I will be able to simply cut and paste. There is always the chance that I lose some info, or have to start from scratch...the risks we take.
I made the move for the obvious increase in flexiblility. Not being limited to a blog format on every page, being able to design and upload to sub-domains...
Well, wish me luck.

More to Come
So, I haven't been able to post lately. I've been spending my time in re-design mode. I hope that it is easier to read, and more functional to navigate through.
I have added separate pages for my personal performance schedule, and for current/prospective patients.
In addition, I have had a hard time getting the archive pages to work correctly.
I hope to get everything working soon.

Not Easy Being Read.
Wow. What encouragement to know that this effort is being looked at [and not by friends who were paid a modest sum of money]. People are reading this!
This is exactly what its intent was... I hope to continue to develop this site, and I am excited to see what it will become. Its title has evolved, and thanks to Ms. Cool, I have a new background color!
In response to Heidi's comments: Yes, I knew that the issue had been resolved. That was an important point that should have been included, and I apologize for leaving it out. My intent with that post, was to convey the importance of understanding the weight of the information we publish on-line. The consequences can be devastating if this isn't taken into consideration.
Thanks, again, for the encouragement.

A New Title
A new name is needed for this blog [so I've been told]. I agree. Bass regards doesn't have anything to do with dentistry. Lately that's what I've been posting about, but I would also like to keep some aspect of music in it... "Musical tooth" doesn't work for me... What about "Medicusi Dentatus Musaeus" the musical dentist... too korny? I think we'll try it. If you can come up with something better, let me know. I could use the help.

How about "Going Dental"?
Gettin' up there...
I've made it into the top five pages of dental blogs on google. If you search "dental blog" I come up as the 39th listing; if you search "student dental blog" I'm 8th. Kind of exciting, right? Maybe by the end of dental school this blog will be in the top ten. We'll see if the web traffic numbers go up significantly over the next couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted.

...and the bass player says, "Changed the look of my blog today."
After hours [mere seconds, really] of fussing, I have settled on a design for Bass Regards. I hope to enjoy this for a while, at least untill blog@case upgrades to Movabletype 3.2 [any time now, guys].

Mass Confusion
At first, I joined friendster. That was fun for a while, then I was introduced to facebook. Also enjoyable for a good bit. Now, I have a myspace account too. The problem comes in when I am wasting time surfing between sites, updating each one because I don't want anyone to miss out on anything. Do I really need all these accounts to keep in touch with my friends? Is one better than the other? Can I successfully consolidate?
First Question -- Do I need them all? Well, I haven't seen any major benefit. I do, from time to time, check out new pictures of my friends. And, I have made connections with some that I have lost touch with. I haven't, however, made any life-changing connections [especially within the last year or so] that I couldn't have made in other ways.
Second Question -- Which is the best? I suppose they all have thier merits. I like facebook because of the picture format [you can tag each friend, and everyone is updated that it has been posted], but I like flickr better. I like friendster because... well I've used it the longest. I like myspace because it's more customizable [is that a word?]. Overall? I think myspace wins.
Last Question -- Consolidation? I think I can link directly to friends facebook/friendster pages. If so, then when I want to check up on what my friends are up to, I can go to their page. If I give notice that I am closing my account, then my friends know where to find me, too [here, myspace]. The benefit is that I wont be wasting time updating 3 different sites [time that could be spent posting to my blog].
That's all I got.

Late NIght / Early Morning
I'm not sure if it's the stress from school, or my impending board examination. I can't sleep. I haven't posted in a long time (tho I really have meant too). Here it is, 5 in the morning and for some reason, I am compeled to write.
I've heard that it is theraputic, blogging. In that case maybe this should be my Lenten offering... I usually give up something tangible like sweets or soda, or a habit like watching TV or being argumentative. This could aid in keeping me away from those habits... It's possible that it may also cause more harm than good. -- Something to keep in the back of my mind I guess.
It may also help in my chinese studies. I have a tough time writing/thinking in another language, and that barrier is one that I would really like to break through. I've seen several blogs listed on chinesepod, join the masses? Certainly would help with building my vocab and praticing my gramar. A new thread should be started I suppose...
Also, there's a lot going on with school. Classes, of course, Lab, Clinic starting in May, ASDA, Sports Dentistry Club, and the ARTS initiative (A Reason To Smile). Quite a few things... The ARTS initiative is especially exciting, and I need lots of help with that in the coming months. Another new thread... (I have more to write about than I thought.)
Untill next time...
Bass regards,
db
