Harrah's Casino: the little things
This case study was interesting. I particularly enjoyed how the company was able to motivate their employees with simple incentives. The one thing that stood out to me was how a particular manager can motivate their employees with little things like giving them t-shirts. The group missed their targeted goal by a little but the manager was able to motivate them by giving them the t-shirts. I guess this really works because they achieved their goal the next quarter. It is the little things that have the most effect on a group. The group may have achieved their goal the next quarter without the gift from the manager but they probably worked harder knowing the manager really cared about them and is working to help them achieve their goal. The gesture of giving the gift probably motivated them.

I have to agree with your statement about how "it is the little things that have the most effect on a group." It is these little things that indicate to group members that the manager/boss care and are interested in the group's job. Even with a seemingly little thing like a t-shirt, it is what the shirt represents that matters more to employees than the object itself. A boss or manager who takes the time to reward employees with small items indicates that they are there for the employees every step of the way. They are not simply motivating them to work hard as the project goes along; even afterward, they are there to show their support for a job well done. I believe that that is cruical to proper management and ties in well with our discussion on motivation and how a salary alone is sometimes not enough. Little extras indicate team unity that will benefit everyone in the long run.

Motivation is a great thing. And environment is the best motivation sometimes.
