One Week Later

First off, I'm only a little surprised that I'm still able to login on the Case network. I'm assuming for now that the lockout will happen immediately after payroll is processed at the end of the month. So, for now, I figure what the heck. Why not post an update?

I'm finishing off my first week here at Infiniti Systems Group with my nose already deep into one of their core projects. My first big move here was to jump right into billable hours on a project. If you're not doing something that drives revenue you need to evaluate the criticality of what you're doing. Anyway, those years of writing PL/SQL packages on the KSL Tech Team are now paying off.

The drive from North Olmsted to Brecksville is actually very smooth. If I don't hit the road early enough to be ahead of the crowd on I-480 it is very convenient to pop down to I-80 and enjoy a ride with practically no traffic at all. Then, when I arrive at the office I have the pleasure of parking within 30 feet of the front door in a FREE lot!

For those of you who give a flying hoot, my (marginally obfuscated) email here is khiggs at myisg dot com.

Time to write some code.

And the lame duck says: "Quack, Quack!"

Counting down the last hours of Case employment. Aside from checking that the server shutdown I scheduled for later today actually happens as intended, and attending the farewell event they're putting on for me this afternoon I've already completed all of my official to-do list items for the day. I guess it's time to start purging my desktop of my multiple gigabytes of MP3 files.

KSL Needs a Webmaster -or- 'Goodbye CWRUel World'

Yes, I'm going over the wall. As of end-of-day on Friday, May 20 I will no longer be employed by Case. I've accepted an offer from Infiniti Systems Group in Brecksville to be what they are calling a Project Consultant. I won't go into the talk about what they do because you can follow the link to their site and see that for yourself.

What lead me to this? Let me say right here that my decision to leave Case has nothing to do with any individual. People always speculate that so-and-so is leaving because he was finally fed up with ... That is not the case here. The Tech Team works hard and plays hard so there are the normal, occasional conflicts but nothing that leads to a long term decision to pack up and leave.

This is more from my need to stretch my legs now and then and do something different. I'm a creative person who needs to express that creativity now and then. So, as you can guess, the Case branding does play a part in this decision as it does a certain amount of creativity squelching. I'm doing more and more of the same things on a day-to-day basis and that is not a good thing for me. So, I put the resumé up on a couple of boards and waited for the right opportunity to find me.

That's right. I did practically no active searching for job opportunities. I put up a resumé and let the head hunters find me with offers based on it. I have a perfectly good, stable job that has a lot to offer and there's no need to jump ship irrationally just because of a few fixable leaks.

At any rate, for all of you web development geeks out there, polish up your resumé with emphasis on all of your web coding languages and database work because the KSL Tech Team is unique on campus as a place to write code. Have a look at the student job description on the KSL web site to get an idea of what to expect.

P.S. Jeremy, you're going to want to archive that post about branding your departmental blog.

WooHoo! I just reduced the number of places to post by 1 without reducing the number of places that actually get posted. Thanks to Jeremy and whomever he has working with him on blog.Case.edu for getting the LJPost extension working.

Moving Right Along

Had some fun doing the handyman thing at home this weekend. We invited the inlaws over for Saturday afternoon so my father-in-law could bring his propane torch and we could play with fire. The project was to remove the old acrylic kitchen sink and replace the entire assembly... sink, faucet, drain assembly, etc... with a nice new stainless steel sink. The torch was required because I saw no reason to not add accessible shut-off valves.

Blog Neglect

I've been terribly neglectful of this thing. I'm surprized the blogging police haven't found me and had me punished in some evil way. I guess that's what I get for letting my life get out of hand for a couple of weeks.

The hybrid will reach the 2000 mile mark sometime in the next week to 10. It's at about 1780 now and with me putting about 50 miles a day on it I won't have to do any extra driving for that to happen. I'm now averaging a fairly consistant 31 MPG combined city + highway.

It was good to hear this morning that someone in AAA is moving to pressure Congress to pressure the EPA to update their process for calculating fuel economy. The current system predates the catalytic converter and is woefully inaccurate. More on that later.

Escape Hybrid Update

Well, I put the first tank full of gas into the new hybrid and here are the results (knowing that I started with a full tank).

10.999 gallons used over 337 miles for an average of 30.639 MPG. The in-dash display indicated that I was 77 miles from empty when I pulled up to the pump. The same indicator stated that I was 460 miles from empty after refueling so I can anticipate something in the range of 400 to 460 miles per full tank before I limp to the next filling station at up to 30 mph on the electrical system.

Lovin' the new hybrid

This last Saturday (05-Feb-05) we went to the dealer and picked up our new 2005 Escape Hybrid. These are few and far between in Ohio for a couple of reasons. 1) Ford just started releasing them to Ohio dealers this month and 2) in order to give preference to hot hybrid markets like California and Oregon each Ford dealer in Ohio is being allotted exactly 1 of these.

[EDIT]Pix now available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/47328264@N00/sets/116393/[/EDIT]

Ours is 'Titanium Green' and the only options we went for were the cargo cover and the 110 volt AC outlet. I've been driving this thing for nearly a week now and am getting something over 28.5 MPG. I say "something over" because they start the counter at 0 MPG and you have to drive enough to establish a significant history for that reading to be meaningful.

How to make a proper Jack and Coke

Yeah, I know, it's just another alcoholic recipe but, how can you possibly expect to explain to your grandchildren how you had fun at college if you didn't get completely drunk off your ass at least once?

INGREDIENTS:
6 cubes of ice
8 ounces Jack Daniels
One can Coke Classic
One lime

DIRECTIONS:
Fill two glasses with three ice cubes each. Pour four ounces of Jack Daniels into one glass, four ounces into another. Squeeze one half of lime into each glass. Leave the Coke Classic unopened on countertop, as the Coke Classic will only hinder restorative powers of the whiskey.

Drink with your lover, friend, anyone-but-your-sorry-lonely-ass-self, whomever. Repeat as necessary.

How big a loser are you?

I am 7% loser. What about you? Click here to find out!

Totally blows me away. I was sure the no piercings and no tatoos responses would doom me to loserdom.

Do you want to live forever?

Found this quiz this morning.

I am going to die at 82. When are you? Click here to find out!

I've known since I was 5 that I was going to live to be extremely old. I guess to a 5 year old this counts as 'extremely' old. Nowadays I think it's not quite 'extremely.'

WooHOO! Beta testing has begun

Well, it looks like the university has heard the call of the wild. All over campus we have people serving their own blogs off of their own desktops with either IIS or Apache. This poses some system security risks that expose the university network to lots and lots of unknown performance destroying hoo-hah.

I'll start testing this and see how useful it is. If things work well I can stop serving my own blog from my desktop.
