Ted Strickland wants to be your MySpace Friend
So... I can't believe I'm going to say this, but apparently Ted Strickland's got a my space account. Ok, its true, it is primarily a campaign-run account. And actually, props to him and his campaign for updating it regularly and keeping kids informed. Actually looking at his top 8, I'm surprised Case Dems isn't there, if only because as of yet Case Dems doesn't have a MySpace profile (which I am a bit proud of).
Forgive me for my cold MySpace reception, I guess facebook will always win me over. Regardless, I've already friended him. Come on, it's my democratic duty to support Strickland through MySpace, isn't it?
Anyways here are the reactions on the two fronts about said MySpace news:
“We made a concerted effort to utilize the Web because Ted understands the importance of it,” Baker said, defending the campaign’s use of Myspace.com and other social networking sites. “The idea of writing off an on-line community with millions of people who share opinions and ideas and listen closely to their peers in this network seems short sighted. We will embrace it and if people come across his page – we are happy to have their support.”
Blackwell’s campaign advertises and posts information on political blogs but does not use MySpace.com or similar sites.
“We are not running for junior high president,” Blackwell spokesman Carlo LoParo said. “We would consider it, if we were 17 again.”
Excuse me Blackwell, but way to hate on the young voters. I don't think their campaign realizes how much of an asset we can be.

MySpace allows anyone with an email address to join. Facebook is limited to specific social networks (i.e. you have a college email address). MySpace has the potential to reach more people.

Blackwell demonstrated a poor understanding of today's newer generations by making such a statement. MySpace is not just teens as he thinks.
In the information world, we use to joke that if someone could not find the information on the Internet, they moved on to the next option that existed. I think now with MySpace, Facebook, blogs, etc. we have to say that people need to find it quick on the Internet and be able to share and comment about it. More and more people are expecting the interaction the social sites allow.
Does Blackwell not consider the youth an important segment of the population? Even if they cannot vote in this election, they are starting to explore the political landscape and issues. They might be at the point in their life were they are deciding Democrat or Republican.

I agree with you, Brian, on all fronts. I simply have my preferences with FB.
Although speaking of, there are facebook groups that support at Ted Strickland (1 at Case and 2 Global), as well as other Ohio Democrats. A quick group search shows 1 Blackwell group specifically at Case and 2 Global groups.
However, if you look at the comments in one of the said groups, they tend to be slightly negative as such:
"BLACKWELL WON'T HELP COLLEGE STUDENTS
IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR TUTION TO BE HIGH THEN VOTE FOR BLACKWELL. HE IS OK WITH COLLEGE TUTION BEING HIGH"
and
"if you like higher education then you woulndt like blackwell. however if you want to pay all your tuition with no help from the state (even though we UC is a state funded instituiton) then go ahead and support blackwell."
Just an interesting side note
