Mae Hamlin Scott
Fisk University, B.A. ’40
School of Graduate Studies, ’44, education
Birthplace: Raleigh, North Carolina
Current home: Newport News, Virginia
Fisk’s reputation as a solid educational institution led Mae Scott to enroll. She planned to pursue studies to become a doctor but discovered her interests were better suited for a career in public health.
As an undergrad, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and played on the Fisk women’s tennis team. A biology and chemistry major, she initially took those credentials to the University of Michigan, but marriage prompted a move to Cleveland. Desirous of completing her graduate courses, she learned Western Reserve University offered a comparable program in education with an emphasis in public health.
Once she completed her advanced degree, she accepted an internship with the Cleveland Museum of Health before securing a job with the Family Health Association. She worked there for several years before deciding to teach. She relocated and became a high school science teacher with the Newport News Public Schools. She taught grades seven to twelve for 22 years.
Past professional memberships have included the National Education Association, Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of America. She also belongs to St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.
Marriage and family have remained important to Mrs. Scott even as she pursued her career. She has four children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
