November Meeting Minutes
GAHA Meeting Minutes:
Attending: Erin, Lourdes, Andrew, Ally, Bethany, Maryam, Theresa, Bailey, Joe
GAHA Agenda, November, 13, 2008:
Calendar of remaining events for the semester:
- Artistic Luxury Tour - 12:30 tomorrow
We send out an email memo about getting a ticket early. The tickets are free, just present your case id and wait for the group outside the upstairs ticket booth. The tour will be about an hour long.
- Museum Studies class exhibition - Nov. 17-21
The Museum Studies class this semester is organizing an exhibition called The Museum: Curiosity and Exploration. The closing party is Friday, November 21st from 4-5:30pm.
- Methodologies reception - Dec. 3
Maryam updated the group on the status of the Methods reception. Nothing too big, can’t have the meeting at the CMA. We’re planning on having it at Clark Hall 206, because it’s a free venue. The room is reserved from 6-10pm, and we can have alcohol (and probably will have some kind of wine). We’re still looking for a catering service, so if you have any ideas, just let us know!
Updates:
- Symposium
Andrew provided some updates on the symposium. He noted that the symposium crew sent an email to department recently regarding the call for papers for Case Western Art History grad students specifically. For students in grad program interested in speaking at the symposium, email your proposal to Debby. The faculty will then go over the candidates from Case, and will chose one student from Case to present their paper. The deadline for Case students is January 15th. If chosen, the Case student will present towards the end of the presentation. The Cleveland Symposium website is now up (www.clevelandsymposium.com).
Theresa asked whether or not we were going to have a similar ‘chose the best’ email that we did last year. This involved the organizers letting the Case Art History Grads what the different paper topics are, and having them pick the top five. Andrew noted that there wasn’t that great of a response to this initiative last year, and that if it did happen again, the email would come out after all the submissions were in. There will also be another email about submissions from Case students closer to the deadline.
- Art Talk
Wednesday, November 19: Dr. Helmrich has two students speaking
Friday, November 21: Andrew is speaking
- GSS
Theresa was able to attend this month’s meeting, and she had some interesting things to say about it. There are lots of student organizations you would never guess were at Case. The GSS also voted on accepting new members, and GAHA was officially accepted as a GSS member this year. Some related things Theresa thought we might be interested in include: the GSS has an online survey about the Veal Center, especially in regards to the summer hours; also, the GSS has a Thursday Happy Hour at the Jolly Scholar every week; there are some pretty informative mid-month forums, including one on billing practices and health insurance (the meeting minutes are available as .pdfs on the GSS website); also, there’s a canned food drive, and we’re thinking of getting the departments in Mather together and having one box for the building, instead of trying to get everyone involved individually.
- Faculty meeting
Bethany and Lourdes attended the Faculty meeting. The faculty indicated again that not enough people are showing up to Case and other lectures (both students and faculty), especially to Cleveland Foundation events, which are important to attend because we can curate shows there.
