February Meeting Minutes

GAHA Meeting Minutes

GAHA Attendance – Will Laughlin (from CIA), Lourdes, Amanda, Christina, Theresa, Erin, Maryam, Bailey

Will Laughlin, student representative of the student-run coffee house gallery in CIA came to speak about a possible cross-institutional partnership between the gallery and Case graduate students, involving Case students curating shows in the gallery. Will explained that we (Case students) would be able to come over for a tour of the school and studios, see what we like, and then create a series of shows in a sort of faux-biennial. The spaces for the shows would include the Coffee House gallery, and also more unconventional spaces, such as critique spaces and multimedia rooms, including a room for screening digital works. The hope is to include more digital works.
The series would take place all at the same time, all at the factory building of the CIA. Contact info is Tim Shagrew. Will hopes to make this all about the partnership aspect, as well as developing more contact between the two institutions. Another goal includes providing a new inquiry into how peoples’ works fit together, and an opportunity to allow people outside the institution to view the works. There would also be a party, funds provided by the CIA.

Will was hoping for an opening of April 3. Maryam asked what our specific tasks would be, since an exhibition involves a large amount of work. First, the curators would look around the studios and find art to connect together into cohesive ideas and shows. The CIA would take care of wall labels, most of which would be tombstone format. We would write the statement for the show – very short – no more than 150 words (the example of a previous curator’s multi-page statement was brought up as an example of what not to do).
Maryam made the comparison that this would be like our curating shows at the Cleveland Foundation, but on a larger scale and with more artists. Christina brought up the point that with the Cleveland Foundation, the curator is responsible for doing it all. Maryam noted that just weeding out the artists took a long time. With comprehensive exams coming up, it might be better to approach first years or doctoral students. Maryam suggested if not April, perhaps the exhibition could come later, and we could at least start talking. We suggested contacting Dr. Helmreich and Dr. Olszewski, and see what they think. Dr. Helmreich might be interested for the museum studies program. Another suggestion came up that perhaps we could narrow it down to one show a semester.
Will, a fourth year painting student, admitted that from his experience of being in and curating shows that it does involve a little bit of work, but it’s a very good experience. Will then gave us a bit more history on the Coffee Shop Gallery. There was an actual coffee shop in there a while ago, about 15 year, and then it was converted to a gallery space. We mentioned seeing a show in there featuring a pile of junk in the center. Will said his goal is to move away from the less professional style of exhibiting, and try to promote a gallery that shows good, hard work that could potentially be seen in other venues (i.e. ok you have a pile of trash....now explain to me why you have it). He wants the gallery to be seen as a kind of lab into how exhibitions change the way these works are looked at, both by the artist and the viewer. Because it’s a small, student run gallery, curators and artists are able to take risks in areas they might not be able to in more formal situations.
Maryam suggested we send out email to department, and see who’s interested. Maybe we could help out in some ways or make the exhibit smaller. We will see what people think, and then set up another meeting with Will. Perhaps we will figure out a schedule involving only three shows. We could also potentially have multiple curators (although not too many, since that is more hindrance than help). Will emphasized that the time-based and biomedical artists don’t have much of an opportunity to show their work, and this would be a good opportunity for them. Will also mentioned finding out who his equivalent advisor would be, and putting them in contact with Dr. Helmreich or Dr. Olszewski. Will also suggested we might do a sort of seed show to get the ball rolling. Maryam also suggested we let the undergraduates know about this opportunity.

Faculty representatives – Bethany and Lourdes said they haven’t been invited to a meeting since last semester. Christina said it was the same way last year, although the year before, the representatives often went.

Graduate Student Senate – Erin went to the last Graduate Student Senate meeting, and summarized some of the more salient points. The GSS discussed some changes to the bylaws, enabling them to more easily support summer programs. Also, they discussed the results of the SIS survey, and concluded that there was a lot of confusion about the PPOS (Planned Program of Study) and requirements for graduation. Students are expected to fill out the PPOS by graduation, although we aren’t sure if this happens when we discuss our coursework with our advisors, or if we also have to do something separate. Erin will email Dr. Scallen to double check on the procedure.

Art talk – Maryam mentioned that we are short on art talk volunteers this semester. Anyone interested can contact Maryam. They can present on any topic, even their methods presentations. It’s a great opportunity to try out your ideas in front of a more informal audience of your peers, and can be good practice for conferences. Rachel’s Art Talk is Next Thursday.

January Meeting Minutes

GAHA Meeting Minutes

Attending: Erin, Maryam, Theresa, Christina, Lourdes, Bethany, Bailey, Amanda

January 29, 2009; 11:30am at Arabica’s

The GSS (Graduate Student Senate) puts on a Happy Hour at the Jolly Scholar (in Thwing) from 5-7pm every Thursday. GAHA would like to invite the Art History Grads to come to the Happy Hour February 19th. The date is the day before the Celveland Symposium, but this shouldn’t be a problem, unless there are a number of guest speakers that come in that night. Christina mentioned a gathering the Symposium people had in a previous year, at the Fairmount, specifically for the speakers, but no one but Case students attended, so that’s probably not a big concern. Stay tuned for more info once the Symposium people figure out accommodation.

Friday, February 27th, we were thinking of having another PhD roundtable, if the PhDs are willing ☺ Last year this was a great way for the PhDs to share their wisdom with us in a casual setting.

Friday, April 27th, Tom Hinson of the CMA has agreed to give a tour of the Lee Friedlander photo show that will be up at the museum at that time. We will try to get an estimate of how many people will be coming.

Jen has agreed to host the Clothing Exchange at her house, and wanted to know if we wanted to have it on a weekend or weeknight. One of the first years said Thursdays would be bad. Maryam suggested a Saturday, and then we could go up to Cedar/Lee for drinks afterwards. We’ll check with Jen, and keep you updated.

Jen also said she’d be interested in organizing a tour of the Cleveland Clinic in March, after the Clinic has installed two new acquisitions. Some students went to the tour offered through the Friends of Art last semester, and we wanted to know how many would still be interested in going. Christina suggested opening it up to undergrads too, but sadly, like with the Friedlander show, the tour is limited to about 15 people. However, if there are spots left, we would consider opening them up to undergrads in the department. At least eight people at the meeting seemed to be interested in going to another tour in March.

Maryam has coordinated a roundtable with Timothy Rub, the Director of the CMA, although the format isn’t laid out yet. He is available April 9th, 10th, and 14th for about an hour starting at 5:30pm. We discussed what others thought of these times, and someone mentioned Dr. Petritis had a talk on one of those days, but it’s at noon. Christina brought up the question of whether or not we had informed Dr. Olszewski, and ask what would be the best day for the faculty (since many of them are not on campus on Fridays). We are working with Dr. O, and plan to ask him what the best day for the faculty might be.

There is a possibility of a tour of the AAWR (Artists’ Archives of the Western Reserve), sometime on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays. People seem to agree that Thursday mornings (before Dr. Scallen’s class at 1:15) would be best. Erin is going to see what might be possible.

Maryam has talked to Dr. Petridis about giving a tour of the African show due to open in March. He is interested in giving a tour, although a date hasn’t been picked yet. Megan suggested doing the tour on a Wednesday or Friday evening. One student brought up that the African class, taught by Dr. Pfeffer, goes until 7 on Wednesday nights. This might be advantageous, since they could come straight form class. Maryam will see if Dr. Petridis is interested in giving a tour that late. As for Friday night, we would need to consider that the Roman class goes until 5.

The February GSS General Assembly is Thursday, February 6th. Erin will be attending as the GAHA representative.

The Faculty Representatives have yet to be asked to a Faculty meeting, and have nothing to report.

Megan discussed the Cleveland Symposium. The website is up and abstracts are listed. You can also read about the keynotes speaker on the site. The tentative schedule involves a starting time of 10:30. There will be a first session with three presentations, then a brunch in Mather 100 with the students, presenters and Friends of Art. Next will be a four presentation session, a cookie break in the hall of the CMA outside the lecture hall, then a three lecture session and the keynote speaker. The reception will be at the Mandel Nonprofit Center, and Megan is making a Dutch Flower arrangement ? The Symposium people still need help.
They’ve decided to not have greeters all day, but instead to have some around the time of the keynote speaker, since that will be who most people come to see. Christina also suggested letting the information people at the CMA know, so they can pass out flyers when we aren’t there. Megan says we hope to have a good turnout, and have made sure to promote the symposium with the Friends of Art.
Jen and Theresa are in charge of marketing, and they are meeting at KSL tonight (Thursday) to discuss their marketing strategies. Their making a press release, sending out emails, and placing fliers in selected areas. If your interested in helping, you can email Jen. Megan says they will make postcards out of some of the fliers, and place them in selected areas around the community – nothing too insane or excessive, but in places like Mather and Gund Library. Megan also discussed where else she needs help, mostly with the food setup and take down. If you are interested, you can email her.
Brittany Hudak is the Case speaker.
A big hold up is that the College of Arts and Sciences usually give the Symposium about $1000 every year, but they have yet to give them money for this year. The Symposium has managed to get some good food and wine for the receptions though. Megan thanked us for our help, and said she would send out reminder emails for everyone. Christina also mentioned that we can put helping with the symposium on our resume (session chair, etc. – sorry, handing out flyer probably wouldn’t count).

Theresa mentioned we have a GAHA Flicker.
