Red Light Cameras in University Circle

Posted at December 12, 2005 11:50 AM in .
Between now and February 2006, the City of Cleveland is installing red-light cameras at various intersections throughout the area to help reduce traffic accidents. A red-light camera is a device designed to identify drivers who have run red lights. A vehicle owner whose car has crossed through the intersection while the light is red will receive a ticket in the mail from the City of Cleveland. Five red-light cameras are or will be installed at University Circle intersections. Their locations are:

1. Chester Avenue at Euclid Avenue
2. Cedar Road at Murray Hill Road
3. Euclid Avenue at Mayfield Road
4. Carnegie Avenue at East 100th Street
5. Carnegie Avenue at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

To view a map of the locations, enter the following link:

Where's the red light camera at Euclid and Adelbert? Of all the intersections, this is the one that I feel would benefit the most from a red light camera. They say red light cameras reduce the amount of people that run red lights. Wouldn't it make sense to install these devices at intersections where there are large amounts of pedestrians crossing? Euclid and Adelbert probably has the most pedestrian traffic of any intersection in University Circle. Every student living on north side crosses it at least twice every day to get to classes on the Case Quad. It is only a matter of time before someone gets struck and killed from a car running the light at that intersection.

I also think a red light camera at that intersection would be a great source of entertainment for the student body. Whenever I see a car blatently run that light, I really want to chuck a snowball at it. Of course, I refrain, but still, the urge to get back at them is there. Seeing cars get photographed for running that light on my way to class in the morning would brighten my day. I'd even expect some students to cheer whenever somebody is busted.

Think about the students. Lobby to get a red light camera installed at Euclid and Adelbert.

That's a good point. Of all locations, why wasn't that one chosen? One of my friends was hit by someone running a red light at that intersection last year.

Just today I saw a car on Euclid slow down as it was approaching a yellow light at the Euclid/Adelbert intersection. The light turned red when the car was about 50 yards from the intersection. The driver sped up and continued through the red light. This is just one example -there is definitely a problem with people running red lights at the Adelbert intersection, and as you say, the number of pedestrians who cross at that light means it is especially problematic. That is the one intersection where I would actually be in favor of installing a red light camera - and they aren't putting one there.

Do not believe that they are installing the cameras for your own good. It is for profit only.

I think they're unfairly targeting out of towners that work or are students at University Circle institutions. There's no fewer than 5 red light cameras scheduled for Chester Avenue between I-90 and Case.
On top of that they're putting all those other cameras in University Circle.
Something needs to be done about this.

I am not sure where Anonymous2 is getting his/her information. I have only seen annoucements for 3 cameras on Chester (Chester and Euclid, Chester and East 71st, Chester and between East 55th/East 40th).

They probably are targeting out of towners, but the only way for those people to fight is attack the constitutionality, since they cannot elect the local officials or vote on the local issues.

I only count 4...
From I-90 to NRV Parking Garage
1. Chester and E.55
2. Chester and E.71
3. Chester and Euclid
4. Euclid and Mayfield

There is, unfortunately, a profit motive for the city to overprosecute - not just with red light cameras, but speeding and any other offense punished by a fine. One way to remove that incentive would be to change the law so that the fine money goes somewhere other than the city - such as the people endangered by the driver, in the case of traffic violations. (Or, as an easier-to-identify approximation of those people, the neighboring property owners.)
