My War Against Spammers
216.195.35.13 is the biggest fan of the Case Wiki. In the last three months, he has sent 135695 HTTP requests to the Case Wiki. Every single request is for CaseWiki:Feeds. For every request, the Case Wiki has responded with a 403 Forbidden message. Of the 1183527 rows in the access log from the past 3 months, 216.195.35.13 is in 11.46% of them! 216.195.35.13 never attempts to edit any pages in the Case Wiki. Instead, he tries to poison the referrer logs by submitting links to great sites selling Viagra, vintage cars, special pills, and adult material. If you look at the Case Wiki statistics, you will notice he isn't getting anywhere. A few months ago, I even had network security adjust some firewall rules so this guy wouldn't even get a response from the Case Wiki. The second the temporary rules were removed, the requests started again.
I have employed an aggressive spam defense for the Case Wiki. The first line of defense is Apache doing a referrer regular expression match against some common spam strings. If a match is found, they are forwarded to a special page that logs the intrusion. They are even given a link to the requested page in case they were flagged accidentally.
When articles are saved, content is checked against an automatically-updated blacklist of phrases (mainly url's). You wouldn't believe how many saves get stopped because of this.
Anyway, it is very tempting to do nothing about spam. However, considering about 10-20% of requests to the Case Wiki are spam related and each one properly flagged saves MediaWiki from starting, a lot of CPU time and bandwidth is saved. Not only that, but the Case Wiki statistics are actually meaningful.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions for getting rid of persistent spammers like 216.195.35.13? I once looked up the IP in WHOIS and sent an e-mail to abuse@whatever_the_domain.was, but nothing ever came of it.

Did you use that address, or the abuse@the_actual_domain one, or both?

Can you publish any of the actual code that you use? There doesn't seem to be a lot of material out there on how to actually plug this sort of thing into MediaWiki. (I'd also be interested in seeing your Apache rules).
