Stopping Referral Spam With Apache

Posted at February 2, 2006 11:39 AM in spam .

I hate referral spam. It is pointless. If you run Apache, there is a an easy way to curb it without having to install a special module. The solution: use .htaccess files.

For servers I maintain, I usually put something like the following in the root .htaccess file. If you put this file as the root .htaccess file, all subdirectories will inherit the rules. Instant referral spam protection for your entire site!

Please read below the fold for details.

Sample .htaccess (I apologize for some of the content here, but it is necessary)

#last entry does not have [OR]

#Now we say what to do with those were were flagged
#We send users a HTTP 200 (Moved Temporarily) and direct them to our spam interception page
RewriteRule ^(.*) misc/referral-spam.php?$1 [L,R]

Now that we direct people to referral-spam.php, you are probably curious what that script does. Well, it can do whatever you want. It can log intrusions. It can display a threatening message. The one on the Case Wiki is rather simple:

<?php header("HTTP/1.0 403 Forbidden");

$url = "http";

if (substr($_SERVER['SCRIPT_URI'], 0, 5) == "https") $urls .= "s";

$url .= "://".$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']."/";

$url .= $_SERVER['QUERY_STRING'];

?>

<html>
<head>
<title>Referral Spam Detected</title>
</head>
<body>
<p>Your attempt at accessing <a href="<?php echo $url; ?>"><?php echo $url; ?></a> failed because we suspect you are coming from a site that is attempting to fill the access logs of this site with spam.</p>
<p>If we have misflagged your request as spam, we do apologize. Please send an e-mail to <a href="mailto:wiki-admin@case.edu">wiki-admin@case.edu</a> with the URL of the site from which you came and we will prevent that site from triggering false positives.</p>
<p>To browse the Case Wiki, please click the link above to access the page you intended.</p>
</body>
</html>

So there you have it. A quick solution for stopping spam on your site.

As an aside, think how beneficial it would be if every server in your enterprise forwarded spam to one spam-handling script. This script would log all attempts and identify abusing users. Then, you could have the script write custom rules to the enterprise firewall. The only problem is minimizing false positives. I leave that problem for you.
