Student Wins Facebook.com Case at University of Central Florida

It was only a matter of time before this happened. To summarize, Student B created a group on Facebook with a title saying Student A is a jerk and a fool. Student A took offense and filed a complaint with the school. The school charges Student B with harassment. Student B realizes he is within his rights and contacts FIRE. FIRE contacts university. University realizes they are outside their realm of jurisdiction and denies the charge. Nevertheless, a hearing is held for Student B at which he is found not responsible.

I find it amazing that institutions care so much about politically correct and non-offensive speech that they will prosecute people for actions taken in a medium not under their control. Institutions seem to be playing the part of an over-bearing parent rather than a guiding hand to foster a young adult's development. At the same time, the institutions are usually clamoring to hear the minority voice and every little opinion, especially when it comes to outside-of-campus politics. What a hypocritical stance!
